Low Blood sugar issues 2 years out...
Hi Grads,
I am developing serious low blood sugar issues and the more I talk to those of us 2 years out the more I find we are having this issue.
Did you find around 2 years you had more and more spells where you were shaky and hot and almost passed out? I find this happens to me even after a meal.
My Dr. said to buy sugar pills and eat every 2 hours and more complex carbs. I am finding this to be really hard to do and fear leaving the house....
Any thoughts, suggestions would be appreciated.
Take care,
Kathy
Kathy, I am 19 months out and I too have had low blood sugar, it is not a fun time. I was told to eat protien...Peanuts and raisins mixed together and place in sandwich bags about 1/4 c. and eat this when I have low sugar, esp when I'm away from home. Also I am to eat 6 small meals aday. That helps, I notice this happens to me when I am busy doing manual work, lifting etc. So I keep the peanuts handy. Sure hope this helps. God bless.
have you seen the article on Alimentary hypoglycemia? It is a fairly common side effect of surgery.
I carry a snack in the trunkof my car - peanut butter crackers. it is important to have a snack with carbs for the quick relief and protein for a more sustained release of energy.
I will email it to you
are you going to the walk on Sat?
Hi Willow,
No, I had not seen that article. I really want to see it. I am so mad that they people I have been working with do not make us more aware of these side effects so we can be prepared.... grrrrr
Thanks for sending me the article. I would love go to the walk Saturday but we have to get ready and head to FL. My DH's father is not doing well and we are going to have to put him in a nursing home. First my Aunt now my father in law. Getting old sucks!!!!
Take care,
kathy
Hi Kathy,
I am on this site for the first time in several months. I logged on to research this very topic. I will be 2 years out in December and lately have been having the same icky feelings and at first thought it was a panic attack. I am busy chasing around two toddlers (and my hubby is chasing ME) and when I have these spells it turns me into a different person. I have to stop and eat some pretzles and cheese (toddler food, lol) and that helps. I will be making a dr appt soon to find out more.
Thanks for posting!

Hi Molly,
Well, I am sorry to hear you are having the same thing happen. Once I get the shakes and sweats then I get weird too. I find the pills the doctor recommended works better than food.
They are called Glucose Tablets and come in oragne and raspberry. I called them sugar pills but they really have low sugar in them but work GREAT! Here is the nut info:
Cals for one tablet 15
Fat 0
Carbs 4
Sugars 4
I don't dump on these as they are very low. As soon as they melt in my mouth I start to feel better. You can get them at any store like WalGreens....
Good luck!
Take care,
Kathy
Kathy, I'm not 2 year out yet....but I do have spells periodically. I keep peanut butter crackers with me at all times, usually 3 crackers will help raise my sugar level up fairly quickly. I was aware of what was happening the first time it happened since I experienced the same symptoms with diabetes before surgery.
My surgeon said they have been gathering information on reactive hypoglycemia (or as he called it late dumping). He suggested the peanut butter crackers or at least a protein with a carb to level out the sugar.
Hope you get a handle on the situation, it is frightening.
Dana
Hey Dana! I have seen info on reactive hypoglycemia AND late dumping, but I've always seen them as separate problems (never did understand the difference though, is there even a difference?).
I'd love any links or info anyone can provide, I'm a little scared (blood sugar was tested at 23 after a grand mal seizure recently and a glucose tolerance test levels were a bit low too), but I figure if my doc isn't too worried maybe I shouldn't be?
Good to see ya Dana.
