sugar intake
Had surgery 05-17-06 at this time i have lost 78lbs.Iam very excited !!!!! I do however need to know about milk,my doctor said not to eat or drink anything with over 5mg of sugar.I have found that whole milk, skim and 2% all have 12 grams, not sure if I can have this. Could someone please help. tks, Sherry
I worry what information doctors and nutritionists give WLS patients these days. I was required a nutrition class, supplied with tons of sample menus, forms of dietary calcium and other vitamins and minerals to eat, other recommended foods, amounts and types to eat at different stages etc etc. Milk was there.
Please call your doctor/nutrtionist and get their specific recommendations.
The sugar in milk is from lactose, not regular sugar. And where I would say "it's ok to drink it", I am not your doctor, nor do I know his plan.
The lowest you will find will be in Hood Carb Count Down Milks, I think. (They are an acquired taste, but lower calories as well.)

I was told milk is ok. to read labels and look at the ingrediants, and that the (in my case) 2 grams of sugar would be refined sugar added to a product. they give out so much info it is hard to absorb it all and to retain and understand it all, and it is natural that you will come up with questions as time goes on.
basically, I look at ingrediant lists on anything packaged that I eat, if sugar is in the first couple of ingrediants I have concern. some things like cereals w with dried fruits like raisins or cranberries may have a higher number of grams, but since most of it is naturally occurring sugars from the fruit I am not concerned.
The majorituy of my diet comes from natural whole foods, that do not come in packages with labels and I dont worry about the sugar content in my bananas, apples, carrots, etc. as I feel the benenfits of the nutrition and fiber outweigh the level of sugar. That is the same attitude I have for my milk. no sugar added yogurt has sugar grams, from the milk / lactose, I dont worry about that either, but would not even consider eating sugar sweetened yogurt.
For me, It is all about balance. i have posted a ton of info on my profile on my diet lan and nutrition. so far, it has worked for me for almost 4 years, losing to a healthy fit weight and maintaining beautifully (so far)
Hey Sherry, I would check with your doctor to be sure but.... My doctor tells me to only intake food or drink Items that have 2g of sugar or less in them, however there is a difference in added sugars and natural sugars. My dietician says as log as sugar is not located in the first 6 items under the ingredients then the item should be ok. But again please ask your doctor about this, regarding your system because they all are different. Regarding milk, I either drink soy milk or skim. Hope this helped alittle...

Hey Sherry,
My family always drinks the fat-free Hood Countdown, which has recently undergone a name change to "Caorie Countdown." It is simply ultraprocessed skim milk. My children were on meds when we drank reg skim milk, as they have severe IBS, but the Calorie Countdown works wonders as the sgr is so removed from the product.
We've NEVER had any problems with the taste...but like protein shakes, it's all a matter of taste.
Good luck...Laurie
