Nutrition labs
Yesterday I went to my GP for a follow-up appointment regarding some bloodtests he ran. I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience. During my surgery they took me off my optisource vitamins because of the high levels of vitamin K in them and put me on a Centrum and a sub-lingual B-12. My current tests showed that my b-12 level was off the charts, literally! Everything else was good, my protein level a little low and my iron a little low but that is probably directly related to how little I have eaten (of course my weight has stayed the same even though I eat hardly anything these days!)
Anyway, he told me to just take a Centrum for the next two months and then he will do the bloodwork again to see what it's like.
I guess my question is, is there anyone out there that HASN't had to continue on the special nutritional need vitamins? I assumed I would need these forever, but now, I am wondering. I want to make certain I am getting what I need and my GP is very careful about following me in this aspect. I trust him but want to be an informed consumer too!
Everyone I see, my PT, the docs, all say they have never seen anyone recover from a single knee replacement this quickly, much less a double! Cool, huh? Here's to health! Suzie
Suzie, you will need vitamins forever. b vits are so important and its good to have extra b 12, we have to have higher levels anyway. Dont listen to anyone who tells you not to take full doses of vitamins. Just read posts of people with vitiman defi****nces, and malnutrition and you will see. Also, you have to have at least 2 protein shakes in addition to what you are eating. Just read about your sugery, its a mal absorption syndrome. No way you can eat enough for your body! If your protein in down, that is not good, means your body is leaching from your muscles. Get that iron up too, take suppements.
dont mean to rant on this, but I am frustrated to see people in poor health because of mis informed docs, even docs of bypass surgery. Don't believe me, just research yourself. Talk to people who are 15 yrs out in this surgery, what are they doing to be successful. Sure we have to eat, can't survive on protein drinks only, and that is what the docs are concerned with, but we have to be our own advicates.
anyway, just my thoughts! Kudos on the knee recovery!!
