Hello to all of your seasoned "losers"--- I have no right to be in this forum as I am only three days out but I have questions that Only you all can answer. First of all, surgery was Tuesday morning. It is Friday morning. As of yesterday morning, my weight was UP by 10 pounds!!!!!!!!! I have heard of hospital weight gain due to fluids but my hands and feet don't seem to be swollen. I am very concerned. I also just got my period a week early and am under some emotional stran in a friendahip. I guess I'm wondering what you all find is normal. Everyone here at the hospital seems surprised at the excessive gain. Thanks for your input! ~Katrina

Yes, that's normal, and it IS the fluid from the IVs. IV's are saline, which is lots and lots of... salty water. What does salt do? It makes you... retain fluid! Your body is also holding the fluid due to inactivity. So, sip sip sip every chance you get, walk walk walk throughout the day, and soon enough you'll start peeing like crazy and then you'll realise just how much water you're holding. First rule... DON'T freak out, the surgery hasn't failed! You'll do fine, ((((Katrina)))))).

G'morning Katrina - NO reason for concern, let LOGIC take over in your thought process and put the irrational emotions that come with "fear or concern" aside. LOGIC dictates for those 10 pounds to be a TRUE weight gain, you would have had to consume, in addition to what your body burns on a normal day, in excess of 35,000 calories (yep, that's thirty-five-thousand) in three days. DID YOU? Didn't think so. So, YES, it's all IV FLUIDS and YES, it can be very common. I went home from the hospital 11 pounds heavier then I went in. My surgeon warned us of the water weight gain and even had us weigh in the day of surgery AND the day we left the hospital so that we'd more then just be "aware" it could happen we'd realize it was OUR reality and not panic. btw - it took almost TEN days for all that bloatation to go away, so don't panic about any delays that might come your way, it's also normal! Hang in there, it only gets BETTER! ....Lei
