Ok- I have been having episodes of low blood sugar. When I do, I can't seem to bring the numbers up and have them stay. Any ideas? My son and DH are both diabetic and need to eat carbs to keep their sugar steady and I am having issues with not wanting to eat too many but can't seem to get enough. Hugs, Trudi

when mine fall low...which has been a lot lately...i take a glucose tablet to get it up quickly then i eat something with carbs and protein. like peanut butter crackers if i'm out..i keep them in my purse. or i'll eat a protein bar, cheese, peanut butter if i'm at home. i know a lot of people carry the peanut butter crackers with them to help bring the blood sugar up.

Where do you get the glucose tablets? Are they OTC? Candy

You can get glucose tablets at any pharmacy. Usually by the test strips and meters. They are very cheap, like 1.97 for a tube of 10 or so.

About 5% of people who have GBS develop Reactive Hypoglycemia. When we were overweight and, most likely, insulin resistant, many of us developed an excess of the cells in the pancreas (cells of Langerhans) that produce insulin to combat our bodies resistance to it. Now, when we eat carbohydrates, which metabolizes into glucose really fast, these cells still go into overdrive producing insulin, not realizing that we are consuming a much smaller amount than before. Therefore, there is too much insulin in our systems in ratio to the glucose, hence the low blood sugar. The way to combat this problem is to eat a steady diet of protein every 2-3 hours and DO NOT consume carbohydrates alone. Always eat them with a protein, meat & veggies, peanut butter crackers, meat & potatoes, etc. Your best bet is to limit simple carbs, like white rice, potatoes, white bread, pasta, etc. Instead, when you eat carbs, focus on complex carbs, like whole grains, brown rice, veggies, etc. I hope this helps. Good luck. XOXOXO, Sharyn

Thanks Sharyn: This is what is happening to me and I have been taking care of it by eating that way. I can't have simple carbs alone at all. I go into one of these episodes and it is miserable. Sometimes worse than others but I know I don't want them. I keep peanutbutter on hand and crackers for these times or I have a quick protein drink. Melanie

I hate the low blood sugar dilema. I only get it when I eat simple carbs(usually in something sweet that I shouldnt be having in the first place). I dont dump but man almost exactly two hours after I eat it BOOM!, I get light headed, sweaty, rapid heartbeat, fuzzy headed. Its hard to get it back up too. Youd think that'd teach me to stay away from junk like that, but sometimes it doesnt. ***Sigh*** Candy
