I am 17 months out and just started the atkins diet due to severely slowed weight loss. Has this helped anyone? Should I target for a certain amount of calories?

The only problem with the Atkins diet is that they don't really restrict fats in the diet; you can eat lots of bacon, butter, etc., which can slow weight loss. What I follow is closer to the South Beach plan, which restricts carbs and encourages lower-fat choices. The number of calories you want to take in is dependent on a lot of things---how much you exercise, how fast your metabolism is, etc. I would suggest you consult your program dietitian to figure this out. When my weight loss slowed, I kicked up my exercise, both cardio and strength training, to get off the last 20-30 pounds. It worked! Connie -137#

I highly recommend any lower carb diet - Atkins, Protein Power, South Beach, Somersizing, Carbohydrate Addicts Diet, even the Zone. Eating lower carb reduces cravings. To translate Atkins to a WLS patient, I would say lower the fat, eat lots of chicken, limit the sauces and such. Good luck!

Thanks to both of you for your responses. I am now on my second day and it's amazing that my energy has doubled!!! It's so nice to have this place to come to with questions and support!
