Glucophage
It is the drug from hell for me. Saw my WLS doc on Tuesday. My PCP put me on glucophage for high blood sugar. Never was diabetic before surgery but appearently am now. WLS doc said he didn't want me on it because it isn't safe for patients who have had GBS. Something about the shortened small intestine. He got no argument from me. Man, I was so fatigued I couldn't make it past 5:30PM without a nap. Really low sugars (48), gas, diarrhea, stomach pain, muscle cramps, no appetite (that isn't all it's cracked up to be). Stuff tasted strange. It's not for me. So for now, I'm supposed to call him in 2 weeks and let him know what my fasting sugars are. He said that the 2 hour of 180 and below is pretty normal for GB patients. Over that, it's a concern. So we'll see how it goes. He was very happy with my wt and said I looked great and don't need to worry about losing anymore. I still would like to lose a bit more but if not, I guess I'm okay. So maybe if I'm good and eat wisely, unlike today, I can manage the sugar thing with diet and exercise. I'm not usually that lucky, so we'll see.
Everyone have a happy and safe holiday weekend!

Thanks for your response. My WLS doc has had gastric bypass himself and was diabetic before the surgery. I trusted him with my life and still do. I have researched metformin and did find a reference that said it shouldn't be taken by people who have had small intestine surgery, which is anyone who has had gastric bypass. For me, it is toxic. I had all the symptoms of lactic acidosis. Since stopping it, all my symptoms have gone. So far my sugars have stayed pretty normal by diet alone. He also said that a 2 hr of under 180 isn't alarming with a GB patient due to the way we absorb. As long as my fasting sugars are okay and my A1C1 is normal, he doesn't want me on anything. My A1C1 was 5.5.
As for seeing an edo, the ones here are so busy you have to wait about 6 months for an appointment. I also have PTH issues and got nowhere with the endo here. He just wanted to wait another 2 months. I'd already waited 6 months and it kept going up. Went to Mayo and found out I have 4 gland hyper parathyroidism, cause unknown. I'm a bit of a mystery. So they didn't really have any idea what to do with me either. Jus****ch it and as long as my calcium stays normal, do nothing.
180 and below after 2 hrs of a meal to me is very high. My Dr want's you at 120 or below at that point. I was on 3 shots of insulin before Rny and now im on nothing. I would agree with Sandy and see an endracronioligst (sp??) I see mine every 3 months. I dont know anything about GBS, but I would think sugers that high would not be good. I know they now want your 3 month average (hba1c) to be at or below 6.5.
I would also say to stay away from simple carbs, as they mess up my suger levels bad.........I now have reactive hypoglycima. If I stick to my protein, and fruit and veggies im ok...just no white stuff!
I hope it works out for you, let us know how your doing.
