Whole can of Tuna?

Anyone else out there able to eat a whole can of tuna? I had an entire can for dinner last night and that troubles me for some reason. According to the label, there's 2.5 servings of 2 oz each - that makes 5 ounces of tuna and about 175 calories total. (btw, these are the stats for Chix of the Sea Solid White Albacore packed in water). For dinner last night, I had a can of tuna on a bed of salad greens with half a sliced cucumber, a small plum tomato, and 6 or 7 olives. I didn't put any mayo on it - just drained it and put it on top of the salad with some low fat ranch. I still had room for s/f jello and s/f coolwhip for dessert. Can anyone else eat this much or am I just being greedy? I'm 15 months out, btw. Thanks! Hugs, Tracy

You betcha, I can and I do. I do mine with mayo though. Calorically that isn't alot in the big scheme of a day. And once you drain it and flake it - it isn't particularly dense. I'd be interested to see what size measuring cup it would fit in. Maybe even 1/4 cup. Kathy

Hey Tracy, I'm 17 months out and have found that I can eat quite alot of food lately. So I've been reading many of the older post, trying to find out, just like you, if this is what I should be able to eat. I have learned a little information, things I either wasn't aware of or just didn't know. I'll be interested in some of the comments you receive. One thing you might check yourself on (I was doing this and I'm stopping!) do you drink fluids when you eat? I've learned that even sips of liquid will make a "soup" in your pouch and flush the food away too quickly making you feel hungry too soon. Thus maybe adding to the need to eat more food. Just because we can put it in our pouch, doesn't mean that we should.........and I've been doing this, thinking that the pouch will tell me when I'm full......ain't so. It just aids in streching the pouch. One article I read states that a mature pouch will feel satisfied with 1 1/2 cups of food, and if you keep it portioned at 1/2 protein, 1/4 veggies, and 1/4 fresh fruit, you will feel fuller longer and the less "soft" foods you eat the better. This is so much harder than I thought it would be and I'm afraid of failing. Nothing in the past has ever lasted (weight wise) long and this surgery was my last hope. I sure don't want to fail. Surely with all the good folks on this site we can come up with an answer for you and me. My best to you, Wendy

Hi, Tracy. I make tuna salad with apples, walnuts, boiled egg, ff mayo, and relish. I can eat about 4 ounces at one time (I measure it out on a food scale). Kathy's right, it's not that dense and none of the other foods that you ate are either. Take care. XOXOXO, Sharyn

I regularly eat a pouch of tuna, which I think are 3 ounces each. I eat a lot of those Lunch-To-Go packs, which contain a tuna pouch, 6 crackers, and packets of mayo and relish. I can add an apple on top of that. I don't get "full" until I'm way over-full, so I rely on measuring what is going in rather than what my body tells me is enough. I could probably consume 2000 calories+ daily before my body would give me the "full" response. I'm also rarely what I would identify as "hungry". I've also had a can of chicken on a large bed of greens for lunch, which is 5 oz of chicken, along with Paul Newman's Family Recipe Italian dressing. Sue O.

Hi Tracy, Sounds like a perfectly nice meal to me! BTW, the sf jello/coolwhip is pretty much a non-issue, as it would run right thru, and has negligible calories unless you're consuming way more than a typical serving. I would be able to eat the tuna & salad plus an apple. You're doing great! Jo

I am sure I could probably eat that too. I sometimes surprise myself at the amounts I can eat. One day, I'm lucky to get down half a turkey roll up.. next day I could eat the whole thing. Just don't get yourself to that "too full" point that I know we've all been to.. lol. And yes, NO drinking while you eat. =]

the cans of tuna have a lot of water, usually a 6 oz can is equal to a 3 oz pouch of the tuna that doesnt have much water in it. I eat the 3 oz pouches all the time with salad or mayo in a pita pocket etc. I eat the light tuna as it is much lower in mercury contamination than albacore. Albacore is one of the highest for mercury. it is not recommended to have albacore more than once a week. lettuce, cucmber, tomatoes, jello, all are pretty much mostly water and I can eat almost unlimited amounts of them. they are my munchy foods when I am not hungry but hungry, know what I mean? they keep me from munching other stuff I shouldn't be eating and they are healthy and low cal.

I ate alot of tuna as an early post op, but now it doesn't appeal to me anymore. I'm sure I could eat a whole can though. It's not a bad thing calorie wise and its great for protein! I eat a salad every day for lunch with shaved deli turkey, cheese, croutons and ranch~YUM! The problem with quantity doesn't come from eating tuna~I think quantity is more of a problem if you go back to your old eating habits and eat bad carbs, sugar, etc in large quantities. Thanks ladies for your kind replies! Y'all rock! Hugs, Tracy P.S. I never drink 30 minutes before, during, and 30 minutes after eating meals. Strangely, I never drank with meals preop - I was too busy stuffing my face with cheeseburgers, fried chicken, and pizza to worry about beverages! Thanks again!
