Peanut Butter Questions
Please help me. I have seen several people post about using Peanut Butter to help with their protein count. But I am scared to death to eat any due to the high fat contants. Please help me I dont know weither it is okay to eat some in moderation. Or to go ahead and stay away from it. I am just over 3 months out and have lost 88lbs so far. Any help would be greatly appricated.
Thank you
Melissa
Hi , Your doing great! As for peanut butter..you Can use reduced fat..but its still high. If i were you I wouldnt depend on peanut butter for protein. Maybe after you get to goal sometimes. But the nutritionist told me..you can gain weigh on nuts. Soooo...stick to your shakes for protein and string cheese, and lean meats. Remember those who are posting here are 1 yr or more out from surgery. So dont get in a hurry to get back into eating this and that. Just stay on your Drs. program and you will be at goal in no time : )

I eat peanut butter or nuts 4-5 times a week in small quantites. IE 1 TB peanut butter, 1/4 cup nuts. I do not rely on them for my protein. I do however want the healthy fats in nuts in my diet, for moderating my cholesterol level and maintaining the proper balance of good and bad cholesterol. The important thing is portion control.
I have posted a great deal of info on my profile in regards to nutrition and the need for healthy balance on my profile if you are interested in reading it. My focus is on healthy weight control and fitness.
You will find as many opinions as there are people posting here. Do some research, the "Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight for everybody" book is an excellent resource, you can get from your library, Amazon or any bookstore.
did you know it only takes about 6 oz meat, fish or chicken a day to meet most women's protein needs? add 3 dairy servings a day and some high protein pasta, like barilla plus or cereals like Kashi go lean and you will quicky be up to 100 grams a day.
Peanut butter is a much better source of fat than protein. I eat it occasionally but I am at goal and I exercise a lot. Since you are still in your weight loss phase I would suggest that it be a rare treat in small amounts.
As the previous poster mentioned, the people here are much farther along than you, someone at goal can take advantage of the healthy fats it contains, but it's not a good choice for newbies.

In my experience the high fat content far outweighs the potential protein benefit. In addition, for me peanut butter is the devil in a jar...taunting me to keep on eating, and eating, and enjoying the creamy (never crunchy) delights.
In my book peanut butter and moderation are never used in the same sentence!

Hi Melissa,
Everyone is different. I had very indepth discussions with my surgeon and nutritionalist. They are VERY anti-protein shakes and advise us to use food, not drinks due to the calories of the protein shakes. I eat peanutbutter...NORMAL, not low fat or fat-free EVERY day. I have no problems with it. Everyone responds differently. My nutritionalist actually led me to eat it as I was not getting in enough fat in my diet and I lost too much weight. The peanutbutter that I eat is a better form of fat...AND I am able to eat it as I should, not in excess. Agreed, I do not count on it as a HIGH protein food...more for the fat. There will be people that TOTALLY disagree with what I am saying, but this is just my opinion and my experience. I lost all my weight in 9 months and maintained since. So, it is what I will continue to do going forward. Best advice, ask your doctor and/or your nutritionalist...they will advise you the best based on your history and their experience. Good luck! And WAY TO GO!!!! Great job on your success thus far.
