Elevated Liver Enyzmes

the specialist I consulted for my elevated live enzymes ordered me to take 400 units of Vit E every day, and up that to 6 after 2 months. After 6 months, my liver enzymes were great. There is a study that suggests large doses of Vit E help the liver regenerate itself. That seems to be the case for me, this treatment was in conjunction with the obvious weight loss over a period o 7 months after WLS. Slow weight loss improves elevated values better than fast weight loss which in itself can cause fatty liver and elevated enzymes.

Kathy--My buddy Charlie C was dealing with this for a long time. Finally they had her go off of her pre-natal vitamins and when she did the number dropped dramatically.

There are all kinds of reasons for it.....but it seems to be common for us....I had an elevated count that just kept going up and up and up... My PCP kept insisting that I go off my high powered vitamins....I kept resisiting. But I finally did what she said....I think it was 2 weeks with NO vitamins then 6 weeks of kiddie gummy vitamins. BINGO. I was getting way too much vitamin A and my liver couldn't handle it. I am in NO way saying thats what anyone else has...but it was why mine was going up and up and up. I had been taking pre-natals for about 3 years. Now my count is normal. I'm going to see what my next lab results are before I go on any other vitamin. My PCP says that she takes the kiddie gummies herself....and she says that I probably absorb enough now so they are all I need. So we'll see. I hope the kiddies are ok...they sure are more 'economical'..... Anyway.....just my 2 cents.... Hugs Charlie

Thanks, Charlie. Right now I'm taking 2 kiddie vitamins a day. I was taking 2 adult Centrum but had some other issues (chest pains) and found out my Centrum had aspartame in them and since I had issues with that before... figured I might see if eliminating that helped. It didn't My only word of caution on the children's vitamins is to read the label and see if they contain: Vitamin K, Selenium and Zinc. Often kiddie vitamins won't. If they don't... I'd suggest getting a very small separate supplement for each of those. I ended up with a selenium deficiency due to being on children's vitamins and had rib cartilage issues. I think the issues I had were due to the deficiency since it seemed to get better when I added the selenium supplement (per my doc). I am a human science project. Hugs, Kathy

I too had high enyzmes and they also checked for hepitatus (sp) and did the liver ultrsound. I talked to my support group leader and she suggested that I try "Milk Thistle". It's in the vitamin section. I take 1000mg, one a day, after 2 normal checks I cut back to every other day and have not had a high count since. Debra

I've been taking 600 mg of milk thistle for a while. I'll up it and see if that helps. Thanks! kathy
