Warning! Labs don't tell the whole story - Get a DexaScan
Just read your post today... A lot of good info from many posters... Adding Calcium is not the answer. If your D is low you can't absorb it.
6 mos rny postop I had gyn exam leading to ultrasound leading to surgery - no ovaries. Uterus/cervix left.
Oh, did I mention I was 42... My internist did a baseline dexascan which gave me a tscore of -1.9. We didn't add a medication. I did consciously add weight bearing exercise to my already 6/7 day regime.
At my 2 year rescan, my t-score was -2.4 with 5.9% decrease in spine and 3.8% decrease in teh hip.
I have still resisted HRT but have added Fosamax with D. I constantly look for new weight bearing, strength training exercise. I take and have taken Calcium Citrate with D since rny.
Quite frustratinig when you seen to do all you can do.
As it turns out my mother and grandmother both have osteopenia / osteoporisis (sp?). I preach to my brother and sister about the importance of dexascan's calcium and the right exercise.
Best wishes,
Lisa

If you need to Fosamax is a good alternative if upping the calcium doesn't work for you. I know many post ops who are no longer losing density and some are actually regaining bone after starting Fosomax. check with you doc as to what would be right for you.
