Another One of those "most asked questions"
Hi everyone. I found out yesterday that I need to start on an Iron supplement. I'm bummed, I was hoping it wouldn't happen so soon. Oh well. My regular doctor phoned in Ferrous Sulfate, but I'm believing that my fellow postops have a better suggestion for me. So, can you guys help me out?
Best Iron Supplement would mean to me:
Easy to take (not huge pills or nasty liquids)
Cheap
Does not cause constipation
Thanks!
Cathy
You do not want ferrous sulfate... it is too hard on the GI tract. It can irritate it. Better choices are carbonyl, fumerate or gluconate.
Vitalady has a Tender Iron that many like and some folks even chew them.
Hubby and I take Vitron C and we buy it at CVS. It is fumerate, I believe, and they are the size of an Advil and easy to swallow.

been there, done that. Cathy, you only will be able to absorb a tiny bit of the ferrous sulfate. The carbonyl iron is the best. I buy mine at CVS pharmacy if you have one in your area. It is a little over six bucks for a two hundred count bottle. The brand name is Sundown and it says Carbonyl Iron in the front.
I take Feosol from Wa-Mart.
Cheap
Small tablets (I take 2 a day)
I take fiber suppliments & stool softeners to keep from having a problem.
You may do fine without them. I just don't want a problem.
Don't forget to take vit C with them to increase the absorbsion. And don't take them within 2 hours of taking your calcuim.
Hope this helps !
I take BioCitrate Iron made by Solaray, found it at my health food store. It is composed of iron citrate and the label says "BioCitrate Iron is a specially chelated form of iron using citric acid. Minerals bonded with citric acid are specifically forumated for people with low stomach acid and are intended to improve mineral bioavailability." I've had no problems with it. It is a small capsule. I take it a couple times per week.
Hope this helps,
