My experiment has failed

Hi Everyone, I know that I haven't been around much...sorry... I tried conducting an experiment on myself (Note: Do NOT be assinine like me and go against your PCP's orders! ) and decided it was time to try to get off of the Metformin/Glucophage for my insulin resistance and Topamax for migraine prevention. I was hoping to cut out 8 pills per day...I stopped taking them one month ago, due to having hypoglycemic episodes nearly daily; and, I have gained 13 1/2 pounds in that short period of time. No one to blame but myself, I know; but, dammit!, I just wanted to try to be (somewhat) normal. I changed nothing else. I still eat under 1000 calories per day, total carbs under 20 per day and at least 60% of my daily caloric intake is protein. There is the fact that I haven't been able to exercise as much as I would normally, due to having Shingles and the Fibromyalgia flaring up again; but, I adjusted my calories (I thought) accordingly to that situation. Actions to take, based on the results? Back to the Metformin/Glucophage and Topamax I go...probably for life. I guess that I am finally 'getting it' that I will never be normal (whatever that is...LOL), huh? Anyway, just wanted to put a warning out there...actually LISTEN to your doctors. (((Hugs))) ~~Sherry

Hi, My name is Dollie and I just discovered this website so this is my first time responding to anyones messages but I thought I'd share my experience with you. I had my wsl April 27.05 and have lost about 145lbs so far. I hit a lot of plateaus and a little gain here and there but I found out through trial and era if I eat under 1500 calories I will not ,no matter how hard I try ,loose weight. My metabo. slows down and my weight won't budge. I'm just saying it's just as bad to eat too little as it is to eat too much.

Good morning, Dollie! Welcome to OH.com! Normally, I would agree with you 1000%; but, my case seems to be unique in the fact that I have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) accompanied by severe insulin resistance. The opposite is true for me...If I eat over 1000 calories per day, more than 20 total carbs per day (no refined carbs are eaten by me at all), or my protein makes up less than at least 60% of my daily caloric intake, I gain weight. My post-op diet has been tailored specifically to me by my surgeon, PCP, nutritionist and endocrinologist. Throw in the lessened amount that I usually exercise lately, due to health factors...*sigh* I'm just a freak of nature that came from the shallow end of the Gene Pool, it seems. LOL Congrats to you! You have done beautifully! ~~Sherry

Sherry, hey lady better get back on those meds, I understand your desire to get rid of rx meds but girlfriend you need those.....I'm sorry you experienced the weight gain, I'm betting though it will come off fairly easy once you get your system back in check. Sorry to hear of the shingles, I've had them myself, not fun. Do you think you got it from the chicken pox virus your son had? It's weird how we want to do things "our way" and then find out we were wrong.....*sigh*, will we ever learn . Take care, have a great weekend. Hugs, Dana

((((((((((Dana!)))))))))) I did go to my PCP yesterday. He walked in the exam room, saw the look on my face, looked at my chart and said "So...you want those re-fills now?" Smart ass...LOL He really IS a great doctor. I am SO hoping that is does come off fairly quickly; but, with my metabolism and the fact that I haven't lost all of the baby weight gain yet...I'm thinking it's going to take a while. The gain wouldn't hurt *quite* so much if some of it had gone to my ass (which is flat as a board) instead of directly to my waist. Oh, who am I kidding? It would still hurt. LOL I think between the family stress that I've been under (immediate and extended family) and the Chicken Pox plague, yeah...probably. This is the second time I've had them. I'm 36 now and I had it also when I was 25. Dammit! I thought that was supposed to be a geriatric 'problem'...I guess I really DO feel older than what I am. You have a GREAT and FUN-FILLED weekend, too Darling! (((Hugs))) ~~Sherry 294.5/141/156 ACK!!/131 @ 5' 6"

I always say that this whole things is trial and error~so, you tried it and it didn't work. sorry that you'll have to stick with the meds, but thankfully it sounds like they have you on all of the right stuff so I'm sure you won't have any problems getting those pounds back off!
