I'm 3 years post op and lost 90 pounds the first 2 years, now I'm putting weight back on exponentially. I've put on 10 pounds in the last month and it just keeps going...it is as easy to put on weight now as it was before surgery. I'm hungry much of the time and can eat carbs and sweets now...my downfall. Anyone had this experience?

i'm 5 years out and I originally lost 100 lbs but I've now gained back around 35 lbs. I'm scared I'm just going to keep gaining. I can eat a lot!! I had BPD surgery which is suppose to be the most drastic and work the best. I can eat carbs and sweets too....which is also my downfall. It makes my stomach bloat up but that doesn't stop me.

I think we all go thru this. I don't dump. I can eat a bag of M & Ms and be fine. But just because I can, does that mean I should? Absolutely not! You can still make the tool work for you but you have to get back to basics. Protein, water, exercise. That means no junk food, no bad carbs, only lean proteins, veggies (non-starchy), water, exercise and your vitamins. At this point in time, it is hard to lose. I think we think it should be as easy as it was in the beginning, right after surgery. But it's not like that. We've all screwed up our metabolism with years of yo-yo dieting. Losing wt is hard work. Especially the farther out you get. But not impossible. You might try South Beach. It's a pretty good diet. Remember, when you eat carbs, it can cause cravings for more. You need to de-carb your diet. Protein will keep you feeling full longer and help with those cravings. Sometimes when you think you are hungry, you are actually thirsty. Try drinking water first. If that doesn't do it, then eat some protein. Try 5-6 small protein meals a day. That works pretty well for me. That's not to say that I'm not in the same boat as you. I've gained 6 pounds but have now gotten rid of 3 of those, but it's hard. You can do this! You didn't have this surgery in order to fail. Just get back to basics and follow the plan. Go visit your WLS doc and get to a nutritionist.

What a helpful note. I am several years out post-RNY, which was very helpful. My starting weight was 232 and my lowest was 145. Over the past three years I have slowly gained 30+ pounds and feeling very upset about that. I honestly thought that since I started at a borderline morbid obesity weight, I would probably never have to worry about dieting again. I eat just about anything I want to at this point. I have several bad habits that I think are sabatoging my weight issues, snacking frequeently, drinking coffee with brown sugar - 4-5 cups a day and not enough protein. Thanks for the clarity in your response to Lyn. I need to get off the sugar, drink more protein drinks and exercies. Good luck to you. Thanks again.

Thanks Lyn, that is good advice. I keep telling myself to remember all that I went through for the surgery and then I acheived my goal weight and looked great - "normal" no worries. Though, at one point in time I was a little concerned about losing too much weight! Now I guess that I need to diet again. Getting back to basics is a good comment. And of course exercise....I'm just kind of depressed that this weight has come back on so quickly and wonder what I have to look forward to in the future with regard to the weight. I need to take an active role in all of this. I was down to a size 10, then 12, then 14, now I just went shopping and am in a 16. I had gotten rid of all of my old clothes and now I'm building a wardrobe in evry size ...again...that is really depressing! Ok...back to basics it is. thanks, Judy

Thanks for the reply! You're right I need to get back to the basics. I lost my job in January and I haven't gone back to work yet. Luckily I start a new job next week so that should keep me a little more occupied. I definitely need to get away from sweets and carbs. One taste of sugar and I want more and more. I started eating right today. I'm praying I can stay with it. I know I feel so much better when I eat right. My energy level definitely goes up. You are so right.......I definitely didn't go through all I have gone through to just get fat again!!!. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. You actually replied to Lyn W but it sure helped me! Have a great day! Lynda

This has recently started to happen to me too and I will be three years out in October. I got down to a really low weight last summer, got really skinny, and really needed the first five pounds I put on, but these other five pounds I have gained just recently are not welcome! I intend to lose 5 - 7 pounds during the next few weeks. I know what has caused it and I can change it. I have stopped exercising completely and while my eating habits are usually not a problem for me, I am still very careful about what I eat, my downfall has been the new wine habit I have picked up. That has caused my weight gain, so I must quit drinking it and start exercising again and it will come back off, I know it will. Good luck to you and just like the other poster said, just because we can eat carbs and sweets, doesn't mean we have to. (or just because we can drink wine doesn't mean we have to! I guess that has been my carb replacement, since I usually don't get many in my food other than vegetables and occasional fruit). We can do it! Angie

I agree with Lyn. we have to stick to the basics. check out the pouch rules for dummies. Its helps me. course I am a dummy so i can relate to the title better that most. I also water load before eating at times. well no****er but tea and it helps me from eating as much. good luck, Terri

4 years and 2 babies later, I have also gained about 30 lbs. I feel like such a failure. I can't tell you happy to see that I'm not alone in this and that there is still hope for me to get back on track. Thanks for posting this now. When I wake up, I'm going back to basics. Good-bye Carbs! Good night!
