I have ate one bite of chicken and didn't chew it well. About 15 min. after swallowing I started hurting really bad in my chest. Finally I threw up. The bad thing was i threw up 5 times in 5 hours. Everytime I would try to drink I would throw up again. How dangerous is the throwing up? Thanks for listening,Lori

That is different than dumping. Sounds like you got the chicken stuck and it took awhile to either pass or finally come up. \it really isnt dangous to throw up unless it just wont stop then you would have to check with your doctor. Glad everything work out.

Can I ask a pointed question? Is chicken (well chewed or otherwise) an allowed food for this point in your post-op recovery? If not, would you venture a suggestion as to why not? Nowhere Man/PH/Jay

Chicken was one of the hardest meats for me to handle at your stage. I needed moist meat and the chicken was always a little too dry. Have you tried sipping chamomile tea? Whenever I had the problem you described, I sipped the tea as soon as possible. And I mean tiny, tiny sips. It really settles your irritated pouch a lot quicker. The first time it happened, I waited until about an hour of agony and it took about another hour for my stomach to settle. I found the quicker I started sipping the tea, the quicker I felt better. The last time I had the problem, I started sipping the tea almost immediately and within 15-20 minutes felt much much better. I usually went back to yogurt until my pouch settle down again before eating solid foods. HTH Linda

Um, this is the Grad Board? Even our conservative doc allows meat as soon as we can tolerate it *after* the month of liquids. And, IMNHO, anyone who is 1+ years out and can't eat meat has a problem . . .

it took me 4-5 months to tolerate chicken, especially the breasts. same for steak. i coul eat ground turkey burgers, hamburger but not solid meat. I found eating the thighs (moister) settled better and also to cut very, very small, pieces the size of the eraser on a pencil top., chew til it is totally mush then swallow. also adding some broth or gravy helped. with beef, using a generous amoutn of meat tenderizer prior to cooking it and staying with moist trender cuts like ribeye helped a lot. I also found pureed chuck roast with a little of the juices it was cooked in over a small serving of mashed potatoes kind of like using it as a gravy, was tolerable. ( some may have a fit over the potatoes, but I am talking a couple tbs not a large serving, I have eaten a balanced diet since early post op, as soon as I was allowed to eat solid food.)

Throwing u******ious in the first 4-6 weeks when we're still healing. We can damage our new suture line from throwing up causing a leak or tear that has to be repaired surgically. You had food stuck, which is different from dumping. Dumping is when you're sensitive to fats or sugar and you eat one of those and get hot flashes, clammy, tired, shakey, have to lie down, diarrhea or stomach cramping. That's dumping. When we get food stuck or put too much in our pouches too fast it can't fit and our body tries to get rid of it. Throwing up is our body's way of ridding us of the problem of stuck food. Don't drink or eat anything when food is stuck or right after throwing up. When you do puke from something whether you're a month out or farther I was advised to go to liquids for 24 hours to allow the irritated pouch to heal. Sometimes when we throw up after getting something stuck we can't and shouldn't drink anything for hours after, despite how thirsty we become. Our stomach has to have time to settle back down and it's best to just leave it alone till it feels better. A day of liquids after will get it back to normal.
