My surgeon has his patients work up to 1000-1200 calories per day at one year out and forever after that. I've tried to stick to that number since I was a year out. I adjust it up for days I exercise more and down for days I'm more sedentary. I was told 64 gms of protein daily for the first two years, a little less after that, 64 ounces minimum of water daily (I do 120ozs.), I don't count fat grams but carbs are to be around 45 gms daily also when over a year out. If you need to lose find out at what caloric amount you gain and at what amount you maintain - the adjust it from there. Try fitday.com to see where you are.
I think it depends on the person so it would be hard for a doctor to give you a number. I read where people maintain on 2,000 calories, 1800 calories, 1,000 calories. Basically it depends on how much our metabolism has slowed down over the years.
Personally I stay between 800-1200 a day, staying around 7,000 a week. I work out twice a day for 45 minutes each time. If I go over that I gain weight. We each have to figure out the amount that works for us to maintain.
Best of luck.
HI Cheryl. Someone here posted a link to figure out your BMR and that was very helpful to me in figuring out how many calories I need to maintain (then you know how many calories you need to drop to lose). Here's the link~

Once you figure out your bmr, you'll want to use the Harris Benedict Equation to figure out your daily caloric intake~you can click on this down below the bmr calculator.
Hope this helps!

According to that, i need 2800 to maintain. So to lose 2 lbs a week i would have to elimate 7000 calories a day
2800 x 7 = 19600 calories a week to maintain
to lose 2 lbs a week 19600 - 7000 = 12600 a week or 1800 calories a day.
to lose 3 lbs a week 19600 - 10050 = 9100 calories a week or 1300 calories a day
I dont even have 1300 calories a day, and i exercise every day, and i dont lose weight. now what?
yes, i drink water too. and eat healthy,,,protein first, then vegetables.
hopeless me

Ok, just a thought here.....maybe you need to up your calories a little bit?!?!?! You said you don't even eat 1300 cal per day~how many do you eat? If you're eating too few calories and exercising every day, your body may be conserving and maybe that's why you're not losing??? Again, just a thought. I know I eat more that 1300 cal per day and I still lose a pound here and there, but for the most part I'm at goal so I'm not losing any huge amount. Please keep me posted on how things are going for you.
