I had an Open RNY in February of 2002....not quite 5 years yet, but I am so happy that I made the decision to have the surgery. It is not an easy road, but it was a good decision for me. No regrets!

I wonder why I didn't do this years ago. The thing to remember is that this is a tool tohelp you get the bulk of your weight off, after that, keeping it off and managing your weight is up to you. I am struggling with some weight gain, mostly becuase I did not learn how to treat myself after this surgery. I had a really successful weight loss and I am in great shape, but I find that I am able to gain weight back now. I have to learn what to do to maintain and try and get this last 30 pounds off!!! -=db=-

Hi there, I'm coming up on my 5 year anniversary in July. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I will say that I am dealing with never having reached my goal, and some "bounce back weight" but that was my fault. 5 years out I've started taking control of my eating, which is still a daily struggle. Know that this is not a quick fix, nor will it make you permanently thin. It will improve your quality of life, and make things so much easier to do and to enjoy. WLS is a tool, and if used properly can work. Even at 5 years out, I "went back to basics" and lost 18 pounds in one month. I have a whole lot more to go, but when I started this, I was @340 pounds, and couldn't do much. Now days my life is pretty normal. You really have to be ready to undertake a whole new lifestyle, including vitamin supplements, and really taking care of yourself. This is a personal choice, and not for everyone. But as someone who felt I had no other choice, I'm very blessed to have had the option, and am thankful that I can wake up every day and live life without the burden of carrying around all that weight I used to. Good luck with whatever decision you make!
