Birth Control Pills
Hi there,
I had the same issue, so i started using the birthcontrol patch. It makes life so much eaiser, although in the year and a half that I have used it, I did notice some weight gain, but Im not sure if i can blame it totally on the patch. Other alternatives, the vaginal ring. I tried that as well, it is also very easy to use. both work well, with no absorption issues, except if you are over 198lbs, then there may be too much subcutaneous fat for the patch to be absorbed well through the skin
If everything else in your life is still the same as it was pre-BC (calories, fat, exercise) and the only variable that changed is that you are now on the Pill...then likely a slight weight gain is a bummer, and the pill is the culprit.
I am on a low dose pill to try to control some serious heavy bleeding (hubby got snipped a few years ago), I have not gained weight...but have noticed that I have some serious cravings and an additional slight layer of goosh on my abdomen. Don't get me wrong, I was not exactly six-pack Sally prior to the pill, but I have noticed a bit of a poof that was not there before.
Frickin' women's issues!

Hi Amy,
To answer you question, when I was on the pill many years ago it made me gain. As a matter of fact that was the first weight I gained on the road to MO!! I know the pills are different now, so I'm not really sure if the weight gain is from them???
Now to stick my nose in on another issue with birth control pills and give unsolicited advice (don't mean to butt in, but would hate for you to have an unwanted pregnancy)!
Ditto what Sherry said. My surgeon has us take a test before we have our WLS and I got that answer wrong. I said that birth control pills are okay after WLS. When I got it wrong I said it didn't matter because of my previous hysterectomy, but he said I need to know the answer in case anyone ever asked who needed to know. Well, here you are, needing to know! He did say there are malabsorption issues and BC pills are not effective after WLS.
Good luck!!
Christ's peace,
Connie
Weight gain is typical with some people that start on birth control pills.
It is an individual thing.
Have you considered using NuvaRing.
This is a wonderful birth control & you don't have to pop a pill daily.
NO absorption problems with it. It is great for a post surgery grad!
The hormones are absorbed from the ring into you.
You cannot feel the ring.
No additional birth control is needed with it.
Good luck!
Amy,
I take BCP because of some nasty peri-menopausaul bleeding (permanent BC some years ago). Not enough for serious HRT but enough to need attention. Anyway, I take Mircette and gained 3 pounds after starting on them. No change in diet, exercise, water, etcetera. So I call those my "pill pounds." Since my goal is to lose ten pounds by the end of the year, I'm hoping I'll dump them but I do know that numerous pills are associated with weight gain. On the other hand, my daughter, who takes pills for basically the same reason but who is on the other end of the timeline, lost 4 pound when she went on her pill - Ovocon. Go figure.
