I am 5 years post of from an RNY and recently had my first bone scane. It showed osteopenia in my wrist only and my PCP prescribed Boniva monthly. Because of the risk of ulcers with the medication, I am wondering if I should take it. My surgeon advised not to take aspirin or anything that irritates the stomach post op. My surgeon moved out of the area soon after my surgery so he is no longer a resource for me.

Those are not the only risks with that drug and other osteo drugs. Please research it carefully before you choose it as the drug to treat your osteopenia. Here are some links for you to check out: Title: reviewjournal.com -- News - Osteoporosis drugs could have devastating effect on dental work http://www.emailthis.clickability.com/et/emailThis?clickMap=viewThis&etMailToID=1409806371 &pt=Y http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2005/Nov-13-Sun-2005/news/4252228.html http://www.southjersey.com/health_fitness/index.cfm?fa=article&articleID=14699 http://www.aofoundation.org/portal/AOFileServer/PortalFiles?FilePath=/Extranet/Active/_att /wor/act/Dialogue/2005_2/Bisphosphonate_induced.pdf There are a number of members on the Graduate-OSSG Yahoo group who have osteopenia and an opinion about the safer medications to use. These are just regular people though and not medical professionals. I am sure there are probably several other pieces available. Try googling for Boniva and various other descriptors to narrow down the search. For me, personally, I will choose to not take this class of medication if I am ever faced with that choice. But as with life there are risks and benefits in most of what we do and the only way to make an informed decision is to do your research and then discuss with your medical professional. Sandy

My WL surgeon put me on fosamax last December after repeated bone scans showed osteopenia in the lumbar spine and femoral head. This one is taken weekly instead of monthly. I'm still a bit wary of the drug myself. I do have a slight amount of heartburn on the day I take it, so I take 40 mg Prilosec an hour after I take the fosamax, when I take all my other morning meds.
