5 year post-op

I'm a 5 yr. post-op and just recently ran into problems. I've had four surgeries in 14 months, (3 cervical spine and 1 shouder), and I was getting prepared for my 5th surgery for 2 hx discs low back, when my bloodwork came back abnormal. My hgb was 8! Well, I've had 3 blood transfusions and I'm taking Vitron C iron suppelment. This is ferrous fumarate and Vitamin C, which improves iron absorption. I started out taking feosol, which was torture! I had terrible abdominal pain and constipation. Now this is no longer a problem. After the first 2 transfusions, my hgb went up to a 10.8. I desperately need this surgery, so I'm praying my hgb will normalize before June 8, the date my surgery is set . Any advice welcomed and please pray for me. By the way, I sustained these orthopedic conditions from an auto accident caused by a drunk driver (other car) in 1991.

Hey Debra! I will pray for you!! I too have problems with any surgery. My last surgery was my bypass and they gave me blood transfusions. (3 pints) My blood count was so low, I had to stay in the hospital 2 extra days. Before your next surgery donate your own blood. It's much safer. I become enemic after any surgery. Unfortunetly I contracted Hepitis C with one of my transfusion 10 years ago, after gald bladder surgery. I just now started treatment for that. One of the side effects is low blood count. My doc says if that should happen he will give me a shot of procrit. My fingers are crossed. I wish you all the best! Stay strong and let me know how you do! Cathy
