Potassium Problem

I saw my PCP for my normal 3 month check-up. My labs looked great except for my potassium which was low. He immediately put me on a low dose potassium pill which is fine, I took potassium before wls b/c I was on high doses of Lasix. My questions are... why has my potassium dropped now, almost 18 months post-RNY and what foods can I eat to bring it up? I'd rather get as much nurtrition from my foods as opposed to pills. Thanks for your input. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Vickie J.

http://www.emedicinehealth.com/low_potassium/article_em.htm This site/article recommends bannanas, tomatoes, oranges, cantalope, and peaches under the prevention section. I have been on a low dose of KCl for over a year now. And when I went on anti-swelling meds post-plastics I took two pills those days - per PCP instructions. Part of it is luck of the draw for some post-ops with intestinal absorption, malnutrition, and/or loss of electrolytes from sweating and excessive urination. Avoiding caffiene, a natural diuretic and drinking a low sugar sports drink with electrolytes added might be an option. Good Luck Michelle

Thank you Michelle! This was an excellent article. I didn't realize it, but I've been having some of the symptoms listed in the article. Thanks again! Vickie J.

Hi Vickie, I've dealt this low potassium several times post-op and think it's time to get it checked again, feeling some of the same symptoms as I did last time, tired, ache, etc. Send me and email, I have a list of potassium rich foods I can send you. Dana
