Did you make it to goal???
I am especially interested in hearing from those with high BMI's who have made it to ideal BMi's. Not our personal goals or even that of the doctors, but the goal weights given for our heights by the standard BMI measurement. I am 15 months out and need to lose 24 more lbs. I need the inspiration and to know i am not asking for the impossible. Thanks, Melinda
I'm a failure if you want to talk about BMI measurements or insurance tables, but I feel like a success. My surgeons goal was 215 lbs, I weigh 188 at 5'6", large frame.
I started my journey at 410 lbs on 5 prescriptions a day with blood work out of control. I could not stand for more than 3 minutes without severe pain.
Today at 188 all my blood work is fabulous, I work out for 45 minutes twice a day, work in my yards for hours on end without a break. I have regained my health and quality of life. I wear size 10 pants, size 12/14 tops, but no I didn't reach goals as determined by insurance tables.
The number on the scale drove me nuts for a while but after long conversations with my PCP, surgeon and plastic surgeon I finally came to accept that my weight is right for my frame and % of lean body tissue. Some of us don't have the frame or the metabolism to be a size 4.
Yep,
I started out as a 6'1" tall man, at 385lbs
Super Obese - BMI of 50.7.
In about 14 months I hit "my Goal"
(189lbs a BMI of just in the Normal Range at 24.9)
Over the next couple of months lost down to 179lbs-
Normal - BMI of 23.6,
And have stayed between 182 and 179 (depending on the day of the week)
For Well over a year now.
Not impossible at all!
Best Wishes-
Dx
Melinda, I made goal in 9 months with a normal BMI, I guess I'm considered a lightweight by some, I started out at 260 lbs and was done 129 in 9 months. I continued to lose to 119 lbs and have settled in between 121-124 on any given day now.
Impossible not, although I don't fully agree with the BMI charts as it doesn't take into consideration lots of things that can influence our weight.
24 lbs is doeable, it just takes more work now.

Hi Melinda! I am 13 months out and just made my personal goal of 140 2 days ago. I started with a BMI of 52 and was weighing around 293 on surgery day. For me, at 5'3" the highest weight I should be to still be considered "normal" under the BMI chart is 141. So I am just barely below the line there. I don't think you are asking for the impossible but keep in mind that these BMI charts don't take into consideration your age. Have you been overweight for most of your life or was it for a short time, say after having kids? Is it in you gene make up to be obese? What about you bone frame? So many things depend on where one's weight should actually settle. Ask your PCP where you should be. I think I found a site one time that said my ideal weight should be 124. Yeah right! I'd look too skinny then. I'm already hearing how I'm too skinny now. I like a little curve on my body. Sadley the boobs have left but I still have a nice waiste and some hips. Lost the butt too. Oh well we can't all look like a super model. I hope you can find peace in your number struggles.
299/140/140 -159 (made goal 05/16/06)
My goal was to make it to a normal BMI, and it felt REALLY good when I hit it.
I started at 295, wearing size 22-24 and 3X tops. I am 5' 7". My BMI was 48.
I now weigh between 150 and 153, depending on the day. I have to be under 158 to get the normal BMI. My doctor's goal was 160.
I was down to 142 at my lowest, but I looked bad. I think the weight I am now is fine for my height. I wear size 8 and medium tops.
I lost 126 by the first year, and the last 19 by 18 months -- for 145 total. The last 19 pounds took a lot of work with diet and exercise!
Good luck! You can do it!

I've gained 8 pounds from my lowest weight of 161 (I'm 3 1/2 years post op) . I'm 5'7" and I currently weight 169 pounds. A "normal" weight for me is 154. that would take me to a BMI of 24.9. Do you feel healthy? Don't let the numbers rule your life. I'm just starting to realize that numbers are BS. If you feel good, and you're healthy now, that's all that matters.
I'm running a marathon in November. I feel AMAZING.
I made it to my surgeon's goal at my 1yr mark. Started at 328lbs and weighed in at 165lbs on my 1yr anniversary. I am 5'9". Not sure when I made it to the "normal" weight range according to the BMI table~I think around 170lbs. I am currently 17mths post op and weigh 154lbs. I would like to lose 4more, but if not, I am VERY happy with where I'm at. I wear a 6 or an 8. You can definitely make your goals! If I go up a pound or two I go back to the basics and the weight drops right off~I have to work on it and concentrate on what I'm doing, but this "tool" really does work! Just keep doing all the good things you've been doing and you'll make it there!!!!!! I f you're at a standstill, maybe try changing up your work out and/or eating routine and see what happens. Sometimes it seems if I trick my body, things start moving again! Congratulations on all of your success so far!!!!!!!!!!!!
