For those of you who started above 400lbs. How long did it take you to reach your goal weight? It looks like the average time is about two years. Getting a little discouraged because I am 16 months out and 85 lbs from goal (200 Lbs). Please Help!!!

Are you sure your goal weight is reasonable? I started at 420, lost steadily for 16 months, then it just stopped. I've stayed around 190 - at first I thought this was way too heavy, but I don't look it at all (I'm 5'6" with a large body frame). My surgeon says he does not have a single patient who started over 400 pounds and then made it down to 130 - 150 range and stayed there. At 2.5 years out I am trying to just maintain at 190 - good enough for me at this point as long as I continue my exercise and diet program. I don't think those of use who start out super heavy should really expect to get "thin" - I'm happy just to look normal.

Yeah I am pretty sure my goal weight is reasonable. My doctor said he would be happy if I got to at least 200 or a little below.

Goal weight for me was calculated by using the Robinson formula and the Metropolitan Life suggested weights... An easy, old formula is 100 pounds for five feet, and five pounds for every foot thereafter. Therefore if you are 5'2" you should weigh 110, .... If you are 5'4" then you should weigh about 120 pounds. This doesn't account for very large or very small bone structures, and doesn't take into account muscle mass or the strong storage of fat around the stomach that often remains after WLS. http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/calories-goal.php http://www.mothernature.com/Library/Bookshelf/Books/34/3.cfm

I think you ment to say 5 pounds for every INCH therafter. I had to laugh when I read 5 pounds for every foot. I would have to be pretty tall to justify 155! Thanks for the unintentional laugh Kia

The BMI doesnt take in the consideration of how much "SKIN" not fat you are carrying around either. I have reached goal....I was 315 now im 139....but if i could have all the skin removed I would be probably 110...which is to small for a 5 ft 5 person. So I'll stay here and be happy! I am a "normal" BMI now. I think each of us are diffrent...and where you are happy is the important thing. When you know you have accomplished your goal strive to stay there...its still a battle. I started my wls journey at 5'6", 410, lost down to 352 by surgery day. I was a slow loser taking 17 months to reach 210. No matter how hard I worked out or how little I ate the scale did not drop for months. All my doctors, PCP, surgeon, plastic surgeon kept telling me the fat was gone that what I had left was lean muscle mass. I had plastic surgery at 21 months which took me down to 188. I still don't like the number on the scale, but when I slide on my size 10 cotton pants, size 14 shirts (due to bustline) I'm satisfied to be where I am today. My surgeon told me before surgery that I'd never fit the insurance table ideal weight ,but I'd be healthier and a lot thinner when the weight loss stopped. Today all my blood work is perfect and I've regained my quality of life. I am on no prescription drugs. I've accepted this is good enough. Best of luck to you.

I started my jurney at 415.4 lbs. I am 22 months post-op and weigh 163 lbs with 27% body fat. You can look at the graph on my website for further info on how much weightloss over the past 22 months. Do not get discouraged and by all means either start excercising, if you already are you may need to change up your routine. Mary 415/163 17 lbs below doctors goal!!!

hi Mitzi I started my journy 2 years ago last month. I was 423. Doctor set my goal for 200 pounds. I am today 158. I have had plastic surgery last dec.29th and that alone removed 16 pounds of skin! Just had a massive revision last week and that removed 2.2 more pounds of skin. I had all my weight in my stomach. If you look at my profile you will see all my info along with pics and charts. Don't be discouraged. You still have some good months of losing pounds ahead of you. Just keep on track! Lisa size 7x in 2004 size 26 day of reconstructive surgery size 14 four hours later! Today size 13 and elated!
