Hi all,
My name is Katie and I've completed my 6 month junk for insurace and now I'm waiting to meet with the surgeon on Monday.  Has anyone had their surgery by Pacific Surgery Specialists in Vancouver, WA? They work with Southwest Washington, which is the biggest hospital Vancouver has.  They have two surgeons who have done hundreds of RNY  (which is what I want). So I felt really comfortable with them, but now they have a new doctor named Dr. Jan. Just wondering if anyone has had expeirience with him.

Also, In the RNY Forum I posted a message talking about how strict the pre-op diet is and people posted back saying it was nuts and they would find another doctor. Kinda makes you nervous, lol!! For RNY it is 4 weeks of fat free milk, 4 times a day, as much as you can drink within 15 minutes. Other than that you can have propell or crystal light. That's it.

Is that seriously bonkers? I mean they have been there a long time, I assume it's possible and no one croaked from the pre-op diet, lol....anyone gone through with that lovely 4 weeks?

I don't know about Dr Jan.. but I have seen other members post who have him as their surgeon.

Re: Pre-Op diet.... I have never heard of the Milk Pre-Op diet... thats not to say that others have not been on this type of diet.  For my 2 week pre-op diet... I had 2 protein shakes and one low fat meal a day.   The last day before surgery I could only have liquids.  Have you spoke with a NUT yet... it would be interesting to find out what your surgeons post op food plan is.

That is my surgeons pre-op diet that was given to me by the NUT. I actually saw the link about about looking up your surgeon and I found him and he has good testimonials, so I feel alot better.

If there is anyone who has had the milk diet and lived, please let me know, lol.

Katie you are in the very best hands possible!! This is an awesome organization with THE most caring and professional surgeons anywhere! I can't say enough about them. I had Dr. Dally for lapband surgery and was thrilled because he had treated me a year or so earlier when I came into the ER with a hematoma and was wonderful then. You will find that even the office staff is awesome and always gets right back to you. I had a too tight band one time and they got me in the very same day I called to get some out. Dr. Jan has been part of the larger group that included Dr. Patterson but part of the group was primarily out of Portland. Now they are all in Vancouver a good deal of the time. From everything I've heard about him he is just as great as Dr. Dally or Dr. Cagle. They also have a great pre-op support group, call and ask about that I think their meeting should be coming up soon. You are going to be so happy with Pacific Surgical especially compared to some of the horror stories I've read about other groups.
Yep even getting the band I had to do the evil "skim milk diet". It's kinda old school thinking but I tell ya it does what it's supposed to and that is to shrink the liver before surgery. I had 30 days of it and survived, it's not easy but you will be very proud of yourself when you get done and you will know if you can get thru it you can get thru anything. It shows you how well you can be in control of your eating choices. I did cheat a couple of times with a slice of swiss cheese and I got horribly sick because my body just wasn't used to dealing with solid food, so be forewarned! Follow their instructions and rules and you'll do fine.
I had the lap band but had done alot of pre-op RNY meetings because that's what I thought I was gonna have but to be cautious because of a clotting disorder Dr. Dally said no to the RNY but would do a band so I'm familiar with both sides. If you have any questions or just want to chat feel free to PM me.

Hislady,

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! That is so what I wanted to hear! Someone who has actually gone through it! I love my NUT and everyone I've dealt with this far has been wonderful. I guess I just got some of those other posts stuck in my head, the ones about getting another doctor.

I'm so glad I did my research on Dr. Jan, your right, he is no where near a new doctor!

I see him Monday, I'll post a note on how it went. Again, thanks so much!

Katie
