Just curious, so if I can get my Dr. to re-word the necessity of Bariatric surgery, due to complications caused by Co-morbids.  Its a possibility that My insurance may cover it?  As my PCP doesnt seem to grasp that idea? Im frustrated, cant afford to go to Mexico at this time. Or pay out of pocket in the states.  Im looking into other options, IF there are any.  I just saw a Edocrinologist, specialist in Seattle, and she is taking me off metformin, because its killing the lining of my stomach.  And is now suggesting that I go on shots, Not insulin but medicine called Biata (sp?)   She is highly encouraging me to have surgery.     So if anyone has suggestions, please let me know. Thanks, Kathy

Hi, Kathy - I would definitely give it a try in getting the dr. to reword the request for authorization for surgery.  Have you seen a surgeon yet?  In my case it was the surgeon *****quested the surgery through the insurance - and the surgeon's office staff usually know how things need to be worded.  Anyway, I think it's definitely worth trying.  Good luck!!

If the policy itself has a WLS exclusion it doesn't matter how it is written up or if it is a medical neccesity. Unfortunately only the employer can change the exclusion and most won't. Hope you are able to find an alternative.

From my own experience, my employer's coverage with Group Health listed it as an exclusion. I switched to United Health when open enrollment came around and now my wife and I both have appointments. You may not be out of luck.

if you switch insurance companies don't you have to wait a period of time before the surgery?  I mean doesn't the insurance company require it? What is to stop people from jumping to insurance carrier A then dropping and going to insurance company B after surgery?
