Well, I do think that there is a finite amount of weight loss that can be achieved with any of the procedures -- and the rest has to come from each of us. Some of us, especially those with more to lose, have to dig deep. I've seen countless people bottom out when they get within 30 pounds of their chosen goal weight, then start regaining.
Agreed! I learned this message a little too late and have been toying around with my weight for the past three years.
I achieved my original goal weight VERY quickly (less than a year) and then amended my goal weight by another 20 lbs. In the following three years, I drank THOUSANDS of calories in alcohol each week and treated my diet carelessly. My eating and drinking did not catch up with me until recently. I did not gain weight until the past 10 months or so, when I suddenly gained 20 pounds. My 20 extra pounds I was planning on losing quickly became 40.
However, with calorie counting and using my sleeve (my awesome tool) the last month, I have been able to lose over 12 pounds without sweating a drip. (I cannot work out due to an injury) This would have been nearly impossible without my sleeve. Trying to lose 20 pounds without my sleeve =crash dieting, losing 20 pounds in a week, then regaining it all back within a few days of "real" eating. I can't wait to start working out and really watching my sleeve do its magic again!

How much weight are you hoping to lose?
1- if you can afford the D/S surgery and are not afraid of the mal-absorption issues it can cause, GET THE D/S! There are some definite drawbacks to D/S...such as cost, malabsorption, and vitamin deficiency issues down the road. D/S wasn't for me.
2- I truly believe that VSG is the second best option out there for people losing 150+ lbs (second to D/S surgery) and the BEST option for those who need to lose 150 lbs or less. It can work for you, no matter how much weight you are determined to lose! VSG has a much lower cost than D/S and, more surgeons perform this surgery (less likely to have a surgeon "screw up" for lack of better terminology). VSG rarely causes vitamin deficiency issues and has a higher success rate (so far) than RNY.
That being said, do your own research and if you truly are still having doubts-- think it over before going under the knife!!!

Looking good! I had abdominoplasty 3/6/14 and I am still seeing differences in swelling every day! I still need to upload some pictures of the process. #Procrastination

I had the sleeve, no complications. I've personally known about 4 other people with the sleeve and only one had complications. My surgeon was spectacular (RIP) and as long as you have confidence in your surgeon, the surgery should be a breeze. In general, complications are just a statistical thing... luck of the draw.

Agree with the fact that some of your friends and family are accustomed to you being the "fat one"! When I went from 260+ lbs to 200 lbs everyone was happy for me. When I said I wanted to lose 50+ more, people acted like I was crazy, including my oldest sister (who might be 130 lbs) and my grandmother (108 lbs). I felt like they thought I didn't deserve to be skinny. Maybe I deserved to be "not huge"... but asking to be skinny? Out of the question!
PS, at 150-160 pounds I do not look skinny or thin by any means. I look normal at best. When I post on ObesityHelp now about wanting to lose another 10-20 lbs, I get the EXACT same comments. "You look great! Why would you want to lose any more?".. "Your body is settled at this weight" .. "135 pounds is unhealthy".. and this has all come from posters on here! So, the point is that everyone has an opinion and, while you should listen, you don't always have to buy what they're sellin'. In the end, your family and friends should support your decision to reach your goal weight, irregardless of whether they think it's too low for you. But they're still human and will want make their opinion known, so you just have to smile and thank them for their worrying about you!

If I remember correctly, I had lost a majority of my weight 6 months after surgery, and had lost all of my weight by 10 or 11 months post op. The next few years were a whirl-wind, exercising to try and get down even further... sudden gains from straying from the basics.. etc. All that said, I'm coming up on my 4 year surgiversary and I still feel like my sleeve and I are on a beach somewhere sipping mai tais!
Realistically though, the "honeymoon" ends somewhere around 6 or 7 months post-op. Soon after my VSG surgery, I remember getting up every morning and weighing myself. Sometimes even weighing myself numerous times a day. I wanted to post on OH several times a day. It was fun to see the number (and my body) change on a daily basis and I was consumed with everything VSG. As the weight loss slowed, so did my weigh ins and my OH posting. My sleeve and I are just an old married couple now.

Tall Skinny Cinnamon Dolce (hot) is my favorite!
here are some other low calorie ideas:
http://www.starbucks.com/menu/nutrition/20-under-200
Just remember that drinking calories defeats the purpose of your sleeve! Starbucks is something that can snowball, just like alcohol.. so make sure to keep it in check at all times. Even one tall skinny (sf, nf) drink a day can lead to a couple extra pounds a year. I drink cafe americain (regular, watered-down coffee) every morning and treat myself to a tall skinny drink from Starbucks once a week. But if you are going to treat yourself every once in a while, get what you like! As long as you realize the calorie content, you should be fine. You might have to sacrifice in other areas of your diet along the day, but life's too short. Enjoy your coffee and plan the calories for it into your day.

sounds normal to me. Glad you are feeling better!!

People always used to tell me, "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" and I'd always say, "I dunno, this steak is pretttyyyyy darn good"
My name is Blair and I'm definitely a FOODIE
But I have it under wraps now :)

Here's th best advice I've gotten so far: "You are Gods beautiful creation. God doesn't make mistakes. You are perfect in every way."
Then from my best friend: "c*nt-punch that ugly ass alien looking awkwardly skinny hater. Eat a cheeseburger. Something"
In the last week I've been told I was fat by two different ******** The first one was drunk and mad that I didn't want to date him. The second asshole went off on me for no reason--telling me I looked like "mayonnaise" (LMAO), "cottage cheese" etc. Both of these ******** have never seen the "pre-op" me.
So, how do I take these comments? Do skinny people regularly get called fat by losers like this? Are they just hitting on an insecurity that they somehow know I have?
I usually don't have problems with these comments because I know that these peoples' opinions don't really matter in the grand sheme of things. I like me. My friends like me. My family likes me. But it has happened twice in the last week and for some reason really has me heated and extremely insecure.

What was really shocking was how depressed I was after surgery. My grandfather died 4 days after my surgery and I was SO ANGRY that I couldn't gorge myself with good food like the rest of my family. All I wanted was some lasagna, some fried chicken, anything!
It made me realize how food can contain & controll your emotions. Food can make you happy. It was so hard to eat popsicles and watch everyone else eat homemade meals after my grandfather's death. But I did it and got through it.

Date of surgery: May 26, 2010
Weight at time of surgery: 261
Highest weight: around 285
Current weight: 162
Lowest weight: 150
Height (kind of important, I suppose): 5' 7.5"
Unhappy that I weighed in at 162, 12 pounds higher than my lowest weight but about 7 pounds higher
than my "maintain" weightMy struggle now is to get these 7 pounds off and maintain at 155.
Anyway, I didn't edit or photoshop the photos so you can see it all in it's glory! (strechmarks, etc)
What's changed since my 1 year? Well... not a whole lot of ground breaking stuff. I actually am weighing in a little higher than I did 365 days ago, so it's not my weight. My health has stabilized. I am able to eat more now, and I am desperately trying to watch it so it doesn't get out of hand. I hope do do a bariatric "back to basics" "diet" (I use the term diet VERY loosely) this summer and I hope to re-energize my sleeve.
I have been more open about my sleeve in the last year, but only with those whom I feel it necessary. My friend decided to have VSG about three months ago and I couldn't be happier that I shared my VSG story with her.
Life's good. I LOVE my sleeve.
Please comment if you have any suggestions for me (trying to get back down to 155) or if you have any questions.
Please don't comment if you're going to tell me I don't need to lose any more weight and I shouldn't worry about those 7 pounds.

Any sport I wanted to do my parents signed me up for. Dance, gymnastics, soccer, basketball, volleyball, softball..you name it. I went to Weigh****chers and two different diet doctors.
My parents were thin (they've gained quite a bit of weight since I've had surgery, ironically enough) but my dad grew up heavy himself as an asthmatic. My mom grew up a tiny, competition ice-skater (in great shape all through her 20s even). My dad was actually very skinny when my sister and I were younger. They are both now moderaltey overweight (mom is a sz 14) but not obese.
I find it hilarious that people think they can control their kids' lives to that extent, even at a young age. Some kids can eat pizza, coke, and reeses each day at lunch and be rail-thin. Some can bring their packed lunch each day with diet coke, veggies, and wheat bread and be obese. Life ain't fair.....
