ladygodiva1228, sorry, I haven't been on my computer for a few days, got an eye infection and had to back off it. It sounds like you and your husband have things figured out on supporting each other, nice to hear and I am thankful you shared this information. I have always thought communication is the key as well, so I'll have to encourage my daughter to be perfectly honest and clear when she communicates with him, and he in return.
Sorry to hear about your hubby's back but glad he got inspired to lose weight and get off some meds, good for him! I'm sure with you supporting him, he was feeling good about his progress.
Thank you!
Good morning!

That sounds a bit odd to me. Even though my starting BMI was lower than yours, I've lost 120 pounds since surgery day less than a year ago with the VSG. From what I understand, and keep in mind I am no expert, a lot of surgeons used to not take out enough of the stomach with VSG, hence the lower success rate. I think they are a lot better at it now than they used to be.
GB is a great procedure and all, there is plenty of reason to choose it over VSG. However, I would probably get a second opinion if I were in your shoes, because VSG can be a great surgery and I'm thrilled with my choice.
Oh yeah! I totally did shut down for that reason! I am going to see the surgeon again and ask. Great advice! Thank you all so much!
My friend's surgeon started her and all of his patients on puréed foods. Don't think the healing would be an issue with PB if she can eat puréed foods on day 3. Day 1 and 2 she was on clears. Day 3-14 puréed foods. All of the diets are different! I have another friend who was on 14 days of clears and 14 days of full liquids. Mine is 7 days clear, 7 days full and 7 days puréed. ????
Iwas initially inclined to choose RNY, because I thought I would lose more. My surgeon told me that the difference in weight loss between VSG and RNY was statistically small. He suggested VSG for me, and I went for it. I lost all of my excess weight and now have a normal BMI!
I think it's rare for someone to only lose 20-30 lbs from either surgery. A much more common problem is losing a significant amount of weight and then regaining it. Perhaps your nutritionist meant that they saw a lot of people ending up only 20-30 lbs thinner after regain. I'm not aware of a big difference in regain between the two surgeries. Perhaps your nutritionist has seen differences in how people with PCOS or Hashimoto's respond to the surgeries.
I suggest you discuss the matter again with your surgeon to see what they think would be best for you. I would follow your surgeon's judgement here. But try to be open to changing your mind. Both surgeries are effective, and the recovery similar either way. I suspect the reason you internally shut down was that you felt stressed out with a suggestion for what seemed like a last-minute change. I can completely understand that.
Thank you all for your replies! I'm feeling much more hopeful!
I lost nearly 135 pounds with VSG. I respectfully and wholeheartedly disagree with your nutritionist. I met my goal of losing 125 pounds at 10.5 months after surgery. Put the work in, and you will reap the rewards, no matter which surgery you choose.
