Every person's body is different. I had fluid retention issues prior to surgery. I mainly eat raw fruits and vegetables. baked chicken, or baked fish. I can only eat 2 or 3 oz at a time. I know that I'm not peeing like I should. I drink fluids throughout the day but I only pee when I first get up in the morning and sometimes before i go to bed at night. I don't understand but this is crazy to me. I'm battling potassium and weight gain along with fluid retention, depression, and other health issues.
Exactly!!! My Dietitian told me not to worry about fat, sugar, or calories. Her reasoning was you can only eat a few spoonfuls! That's crap, everyone is different and i could eat 4 oz after surgery no problem. I watched my Aunt eat three slices of pizza 1 month post op. You must track your food. You must hold yourself accountable. This is no magic surgery.
A few spoonfuls of yoghurt balance me out

Yeah I know..I couldn't imagine either...and there was many other head turning things he has done since. Which is why nothing would surprise me. I think it is very possible to eat your way around this surgery. I don't want to not believe that 18lbs of water weight is possible but if that is what is going on..I would be getting tested like crazy because you might be very well going into kidney failure.
I was on a water pill for high blood pressure for over 10 years up until 2 weeks before the surgery and they stopped it and put me on a blood pressure med with no water pill because they didn't want me on anything that could make dehydration even more likely. I was very worried about my swollen legs and it's been quite an adjustment not being on my water pill anymore. Even when I feel I'm not peeing much I have had consistent weight loss every week. Really hope she finds out some answers.

Thank you for your reply! It surely can't hurt and my regular doctor recommended it long before surgery.
That ... is not recommended! I can't even imagine trying to do that and I would be terrified of tearing something open at that point!

Yes, I use one as we, too, don't (or rarely) eat fish - the current one is a 1400mg gelcap - so it seems like a reasonable way to mitigate whatever shortage there may be.
The required supplement that the surgeon gives you is just an initial baseline, and is in addition to whatever you needed before surgery - if you were short on D, B12 or whatever and supplemented it prior to surgery, then you should continue doing so irrespective what the surgeon's program adds to it, at least until subsequent labs tell you otherwise. Likewise, what is recommended by the surgeon is just your starting point, and should be adjusted accordingly as labs and later diet dictate.

I'm a little over 3 years post-op and am experiencing reactive hypoglycemia. I had low blood sugar problems before surgery but it's gotten worse. My surgeon tells me it's not and is suggesting keto and wrote me a prescription for metformin, which I'm hesitating to take. Thankfully, my PCP wrote me a prescription for a continuous glucose monitor (Freestyle LibreLink, which is awesome... no finger *****s!) and after only a few days it's confirmed what I already knew. Numbers are stable but after I eat, they drop and have even been low with no overt symptoms -- which may explain struggles with anxiety. I'm afraid I've been living this way for quite some time which worries me. I also have a very high-stress job and am tired all the time, so I'm wondering if adrenals are compromised.
Anyway, I've learned from reading information here that it's a misunderstood condition and believe I have to seek another doctor. Anyone in the Boston area has recommendations for HCPs or any links to sites or books that might help me become more educated about this?
Feel free to PM me if you'd prefer. Any information is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Lisa
