I am 5 days post-op. I feel great and feel like I am healing and rebounding quickly. I hate to be so graphic but I have a concern and with it being Christmas tomorrow I am sure my Dr. won't reply to my message on our patient portal. I just want to know if anyone else has experienced this. I have had a sludgey type diarrhea for 2 days now. Only a couple times a day, nothing aggressive, but I have read that constipation was more likely to occur, not diarrhea. I never took any pain meds so I wasn't surprised when I was not constipated, but I never expected diarrhea. The consistency is bizarre, loose, but sludgey and thick at the same time. Sorry for this guys, but I just want to know someone else has experienced this and I am not losing it. I am totally hydrated and able to get my fluids in thankfully. I did not have Duodenal switch done, just VSG. (I read the DS causes diarrhea) Hopefully someone can ease my mind here until I can be in touch with my Dr.
Thanks
I would say this is normal stool 5 days list op.
it is not diarrhea. True diarrhea is like water with flecks of stool in it.
In the USA it takes years to get on disability.
This happened a couple years back and a tear in the colon had occurred.
I assume its a similar thing. Except it feels like the pain is in a few new places. I think I wont get a real answer without getting a endoscopy done. I post these things here as a way to track what happened to me after the surgery. And reflux has been such a terrible battle.
BTW I have Irish on my dad's side and would love to see the Emerald Isles.
Thank you for listening and Merry Christmas. :)
Oh my, that sounds terrible! I've been living in Ireland the past 20 years, so I don't know much about the U.S. healthcare system under the Affordable Care Act. With it being Christmas Eve there may not be many people on the forum. I don't have any suggestions for you, but I wanted to reply just so you'd know someone was listening.
Can you go on disability until this medical problem is sorted?
Also, they probably gave you stool softeners or something like that on the assumption that you would be constipated. (Mine did.) Look at all the medications they gave you and make sure you know what each one for. You could be taking a stool softener or laxative without realising it.
You're right, constipation is usually the problem, not diarrhoea. Then again, your body has gone through some changes, and it will take a while for your "plumbing" to be normal.
Perhaps whatever you're eating or drinking is causing it. What are you eating? If you think it might be the protein shakes causing the problem, skip them for a day and see if it gets better. Sometimes drinking a large amount of cold water quickly can cause diarrhoea. If you think that's the case, definitely do not cut back on fluids! Instead, you might try sipping instead of gulping, and hot or warm beverages instead of cold.
As long as your stool is still thick and no****ery, you're probably OK. Just keep an eye on it.
People who've had VSG need to worry about dehydration. In your case, with diarrhoea, you need to be extra careful. If you start to feel unwell, and you can't reach your doctor instantly, go straight to the ER. Dehydration is an emergency.
Glad to hear that you're feeling well otherwise!

I had my VSG in 2010. Lost over 150 lbs and ended floating around the 350 mark.
The past few months have been very tough and doctors are not finding answers. Over a month ago I passed almost 2 pints of blood and passed out but that passed. Spent the day in emergancy room thinking it was a heart attack. Pain and couldnot breathe and feinting.
My lungs and and heart were in perfect health. So it was not a heart attack.
They think there is sometype of problem with my stomach, the pain of reflux and whatever is wrong with my stomach under my ribs had them concerned. The pain comes on whenever I eat anything and lasts for more than an hour.
This is actually bankrupting me, I can't do manual labor and the pain, breathing issues and fatigue is constant. The ER doctor said the breathing was actually hyperventilation becuase of the pain. Anyway they said I should go back to a primary care for a referral to a specialist.
This may or may not have anything to do with VSG, but is probably related to the severe acid issues that follow.
MOney is a serious issue as I dont have health care but I am wondering if I shouldnt just head to specialist instead.
I hope you heal fast... Its never easy and if you can get the eating in order thats the hardest part! Good luck... Look into the whole 30 if you havent it does work :) Im on day 3 Merry Christmas!
I had a few scales, but I finally got the Withing's scale and I love it. Body+

Amazon has a good price for it. IA few years back mine was much too much, but I really like it. I tried Aria but it was not very repeatable for me.

Congratulations on being so successful so quickly.
Remember that weight loss surgery has phases. You are in the beautiful honeymoon stage of your surgery. It is fun, weight comes off easily, and you feel wonderful.
The honeymoon lasts for approximately 18 to 36 months. After that your body gets smart enough to start getting back the weight that it feels it has been cheated out of.
So most people gain back about 20 pounds by month 36. What my surgeon advises us to do is to lose an additional 10, 20, or even 30 pounds under his goal while we are still in the wonderful honeymoon stages.
That gives you a cushion for regain when you body heals from the effects of the surgery and learns how to put weight back on.
Every person that I know who is successful long term with weight loss surgery has also had therapy to help deal with binge eating and emotional issues. My center requires us to read this book and to attend a workshop on it. When someone I know has weight loss surgery, I bring them this book instead of flowers. Reading it can make a big difference in your long term success.
