To help with the difficulty of getting fluids down, here are a few suggestions.

  • Experiment with different temperatures. Right after surgery, some people find it easier to drink hot fluids, some find cold easier.
  • If you're drinking protein shakes, remember they count as fluids.
  • I found plain water felt very heavy in my stomach. Adding a little acidity (like a squeeze of lemon) helped a lot.
  • Follow your own medical team's advice on this, but don't worry too much about getting enough protein right now. You won't get malnutrition in a month or two. Right now the fluids are the important thing.

Welcome! 2020 is going to be a very exciting year for you.

Everyone's experience is different, and your experience will likely be very different from your husband's. It is normal for people to go through a brief period of regret after weight loss surgery, and it is also common for people to be a little depressed after any surgery or illness. Perhaps that's what your husband is experiencing. Perhaps after your own surgery you can be a role model for him on how to enjoy life after VSG. If his low mood continues, he might benefit from counselling. Perhaps he would find this forum helpful?

Before my own surgery, I made a list of non-food things that I could do to comfort myself, deal with stress, treat myself. This really helped me after surgery. I have also learned to focus on other senses besides (or in addition to) taste. For example, some of the things on my list were to drink some really fragrant herbal tea, cuddle my cats, call a friend, climb under the duvet and sulk.

As for these being your last days of overindulging, yes and no. Ideally these will be your last days of overindulging, but in reality no one is perfect. After VSG you can still indulge yourself, you'll just find different ways to do it. I actually enjoy food much more now that I no longer feel powerless. I eat more slowly, and savour each bite.

Hello Everyone,

I am new to this site. It appears it will be a helpful tool for before and after surgery. I am having my VSG on Jan 27th. I start my liquid diet on Jan 13th. I am getting very nervous. My husband had the surgery on Dec 10th and he seems sad now. He stays to himself a lot at home. I think it is because he is trying to learn himself without food. I am doing the opposite. I have been being very social and the last few weeks I have been having a lot of trouble sticking to healthy eating. I think I am worried these are my last days of over indulging. Did anyone else have these feelings?

as hard as it is, you need to keep the water with you and sip, sip, sip.... sounds like a broken record, but work on getting your water and protein in. you will be sore for a while from surgery, and also until you get the drain tube removed. Walk as much as you can to help get rid of the gas from surgery. That will stay with you for about a week (unfortunately).

Good luck, You GOT THIS!

Right now your body is in wtf mode & is probably more concentrated on healing than losing weight right now. Keep sipping on tha****er all day if you have to, it's going to be hard to get enough fluids in like you used to right now. I forgot when I started seeing weight loss, but it will happen.

Welcome to the losers bench & I hope you have a speedy recovery.

It took me about 5 or 6 days to pee out all those fluids the pump you full of! Really, the best thing you can do to get rid of it is, counterintuitively, to drink more fluid. I know it can be difficult, but for right now, your #1 job is to sip, sip, sip all day long.

One suggestion I have for you is not to buy a lot of stuff in preparation for surgery. Especially food. Your tastes will probably change after surgery, at least for a while. The protein powders and protein shakes you like now may taste horrible after surgery. By the time you're ready for anything more than liquids, you'll probably be feeling well enough to go shopping.

The only thing that is worth buying is some small dishes (about the size of a saucer for a teacup) and bowls. I still use mine.

Some of us are breakfast people, and some aren't. I;m not.

The bulk of medical research indicates that if you simply aren't hungry in the morning, it's fine to skip breakfast.

If you are hungry, but you skip breakfast because you're in a hurry, you should make time for it.

I started at 125 kg (276 lb)

Currently 68 kg (150 lb)

Lost so far 57 kg (126 lb)

For context, I'm 162 cm (5' 4")

I gained 19 pounds between the morning of surgery and the night of surgery. My doctor just laughed and told me to go home and pee it out. I lost that 19 pounds and another 5 the first week.
