VSG & Bowel Movement
Good Morning Everyone,
I'm about to have my VSG surgery next month, February 2019. I'm 56 years old, post-menopausal, and have experienced issues with constipation the past 2 years while going through menopause. Up until menopause my bowels have been very regular, never an issue. After speaking with a few local people who've had VSG surgery (ranging from one to five years post-surgery), I was told that constipation could be a side effect and something you learn to live with, maneuver around. Would like to hear from as many folks as possible what your experience has been, what I should be prepared for, etc. Thanks for your input!
Julie
Constipation can be a side effect of a high protein diet. It's super important to stay hydrated and to ensure you're getting enough healthy fats in your diet. Aside from that, as said above, many of us use Miralax. It's not habit-forming, so safe to use longterm unlike other solutions. I'm 4 years post-op and I will add a capful or half capful to my breakfast protein shake if I haven't had a bowel movement the previous day. These days I probably use it 1-2 a week.

Julie,
I have found (after I went to solid foods) that 2 prunes eaten slowly with breakfast are a big help. They have potassium and iron, and I do like the way they taste.
I've really not had any problem.

Hi Julie! I started to go through menopause about 2 years ago and began HRT. Along with the VSG and menopause constipation worsened. My PCP suggested Natural Calm, it is a magnesium powder drink that I mix in water everyday. It has been a lifesaver for me. Of course check with your PCP or surgeon first:-) It is in every natural health food store I have been in!
I haven't had too many problems with constipation pain, though I didn't have a bowel movement for about 4 days after I was released from the hospital. Just as it started to worry me, it came and was regular. I also didn't take many pain meds and drank a lot of protein shakes, which have a lot of fiber in them, so perhaps that helped. I would check with your surgeon after surgery if it becomes a problem or concern because he/she can give or recommend something that will help. Good luck on your journey! I'm very excited for you!
