Can't tolerate fluids
Hi everyone!
I had the VSG on Monday 10/15. Since starting the liquid diet I have not been able to take in more than 20-25oz a day. It still hurts my stomach with each sip. I've noticed popsicles are the easiest for me. I think I'm becoming dehydrated. On Thursday 10/18 the surgical office said I can start having some protein shakes. Even after 2-3 sips of a shake I get extremely nauseous. I'm wondering if anyone else has/had this issue? I plan on calling the office Monday to see if I can be seen. I'm just worried something isn't right considering they expect me to take in 64oz a day.
Greetings! I had the surgery on 10/17 and I am sipping every 15 minutes from protein shakes( which was the hardest at first bc of the dairy) I started mixing some water in mine, isopure, propel zero and water. Literally every 15 mins. Maybe if you do that you would feel better.
You're not going to be able to get in 64 oz right away, you have to work up to it. That is your goal you need to keep working toward. You need to be sipping all day long, at least once every 5 minutes, and get in as much as you can. But you do need to get in some protein as well. If the shakes make you nauseous, it could be something in them that is the problem. Perhaps you need to try a different type of protein (assuming you are using premade shakes with whey protein). For a lot of people, the same things that were fine before surgery are definitely NOT after surgery. Look for some other options and experiment, that's the only way to find what works for you. Right now, fluids are your number one priority...sip, sip, sip!!!
As I recall it took me nearly 3 weeks to get to more than 32 oz a day, and I remember thinking how on earth could someone drink MORE than 64 oz when it was so hard to just get to 32 oz? Now I drink a minimum of 105 oz/day, and it's second nature! You can do this!

Respectfully, a lot of people are able to get in their 64oz right away. By doing less than 32 per day for over a week, I think you'd be risking dehydration.

Did your surgeon give you a prescription for an anti-nausea medication? You may want to try that if they did. Definitely call your doctor, because the more dehydrated you get, the more it can make you nauseous. You might even want to call whoever's on call over the weekend.
