How much fat are we supposed to have a day?

My bariatric clinic suggests 30 grams of fat per day on a 1200 calorie diet. This is a little low for me. I'm averaging 50 to 60 grams of fat and am losing weight nicely on the same 1200 calorie regimen (protein first, at least 70 grams per day). I haven't had my VSG yet. This will likely happen in January, 2019.

If you have just had your surgery, getting fluids and protein take precedence over the carbs and fat. Calories remain trimmed bac****il you reach goal weight, then the above plan is used for maintenance or pre-surgery.

I think the number of fat grams varies with each patient. My 6'6" husband, who is also obese, is on a 1700 calorie plan and has many more fat grams than I do. I'm 5'7" (almost a tall woman). I need a little extra fat to keep my skin and hair looking radiant.

Please remember that you are pre-op. What and how you eat varies significantly from what post-op people do. Every person gets different guidance from their program/surgeon for post-op eating, and it is very different from pre-op guidelines.

Looking at My Fitness Pal logs, I get between 45-70 a day depending.

Today is 2 eggs and sausage for breakfast, turkey sandwich with swiss cheese for lunch, chicken with stir-fry vegetables and half a sweet potato for dinner, 5% plain fage and a clementine for a snack.

For added fat, try less lean cuts of meat. Chicken thighs instead of breasts, a nice steak, 80% lean ground beef, pork sausage.

Also higher fat yogurts, cottage cheese, and regular cheese, real butter.

I kept myself to a strict calorie limit, made sure I had enough protein, and kept carbs as low as I could. Fat made up the remainder of tgge calories, and I never worried about it, either way.

If I ate sausage and ribeye one day, fat could be pretty high. If I only had chicken the next, fat would be pretty low.

6'3" tall, male.

Highest weight was 475. RNY on 08/21/12. Current weight: 198.

As long as your protein is where it should be to maintain your muscle mass and your calories are in a range appropriate for weight loss for your metabolism, fats and carbohydrates don't matter as they will both be very low by any rational standards. I never worried about either (still don't...) but concentrated on making the diet as healthy as possible within those calorie limits.

I think my surgical team info says like 25-30g BUT they have NEVER verbally said a word about my fat intake before or since surgery and they check my daily intake. The MAIN focus is protein 60g or more and water/fluids 64 oz. or more beyond that it is keeping carbs low max 60g. BUT no matter where you have/had your surgery done they should have given you info on all that if they have not you need to contact them and get that information asap!
