Solid foods during pre-op diet?

I know pre-op diets vary by surgeon, but I was reviewing my nutritional packet, and I saw that during my 2-week pre-op diet, that I am allowed 4 oz. of lean protein a day. I have not seen that allowance in any other pre-op diets that have been documented on this board. Is this strange? Should I stick to liquids only or is it okay to eat the 4 oz of lean protein?

My pre-op, 4 weeks , was 4 shakes plus one small meal: lean proteins+ carbs+ fat. The last ,,2-3 days pre-op were clear liquids only.

My plan allowed for - called for - real food. Pre-op was 1200 calorie liver shrinking diet. Very low (almost no) fat. No carbs. Basically, protein and green leafy vegetables. Protein shake for breakfast (usually I did iced coffee with a caramel Premier shake in the blender with ice - frappucino!). Lunch was a salad of leafy greens (my choice) with 4 ounces of lean protein (chicken, turkey, fish). Dinner was 4 ounces lean protein and a green vegetable. Salad could be dressed with vinegar, lemon juice - any acid but no oil. Or I could substitute one Lean Cuisine type meal for either lunch or dinner.

I had to be no food or drink after midnight on 8/22 for surgery at 8 a.m. on 8/23.

To be honest - it's about how I still eat, except I eat more beef and pork now. I'm 2 years out - breakfast a couple days a week is a shake because its easiest to get out the door with to work. Lunch is salad with chicken breast or some other meat. Dinner is whatever I'm making for the family. So tonight that will be pork chops.

Your doc has been doing this for a while and presumably knows what they are doing. Follow the plan your doc gave you - s/he did it for a reason.

Lean protein is fine. Just go as close to zero carbs as you can. That will use up the stored glycogen and make your liver easier to navigate around. Do it for longer than two weeks if you can. Beating the minimum will always benefit you.

Clear liquids only for 3 days before surgery.

The pre-op diet for the surgical group that runs my support group allows for oatmeal in their pre-op diet so... yeah :P

I had lapband and vsg - lapband diet was 3 shakes and a meal of lean meat and salad. it was so delicious! LOL 2nd surgery I think was all liquids, which is very difficult to get through. I was given permission to eat ham on Easter tho! Good luck. I think the pre-op diet is the hardest part of the whole thing

Mine was two shakes and then a meat, a veggie, and a "healthy" carb for dinner.

Okay so it seems a lot of pre-op diets allow small amounts of solid foods. I plan on following the pre-op diet that my surgeon and nutritionist tells me to follow.

I would have killed for that diet. You are so lucky. Are you going to be clears right before surgery? At least a day or two? The surgeons usually want an empty stomach for the obvious reasons, and so do the anesthesiologists.
