Burning in Stomach while drinking coffee???
HAPPY SATURDAY EVERYONE!!!
Have a question. I'm seeing my surgeon next Friday but was wondering if any of you had this same problem. While drinking fairly warm coffee I get a burning sensation as it goes down into my stomach. I've also got my acid reflux back. Does/did anyone have this and besides meds which I'm on did it ever fix without additional surgery? Do you know what our why it happened and was it related to acid reflux.?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!!

Coffee is a pretty acidic beverage -- I wouldn't underestimate that your stomach is having issues with acidity, and it's causing you to experience reflux.
Personally, I know pre-VSG black coffee would rage in my stomach and cause loads of acid issues. You may want to try mixing dairy in your coffee to raise the pH, or skip it all together.
cant help you with the burning sensation, though, sorry!
Thanks that's what I've been doing for the past 4 days now. Stomach seems to be calming down.

I was on a PPI for a while after surgery and was not allowed to have coffee for the first few months. Perhaps it is too early for you to be drinking it?

Don't you say that because the only reason I was drinking it is because the hospital gave it to me. Btw I was only doing decaf.

I meant that it might be too early for you (your body). Even when we are cleared for food/drink by our surgeons sometimes our bodies aren't ready. Can be different from one person to the next.

Since surgery, and I am almost 6 years out, I have a very hard time drinking anything warm or hot. My tummy only lets me have iced coffee or room temp at the hottest. If its any hotter it burns and gurgles. So maybe try it that way and see if it helps. If it doesn't def talk to your doctor and hopefully you don't have to cut out coffee all together but just know it may be a possibility. Everyone's stomachs are different and can handle different things.
Totally agree! It's ok though if I can't. I'd rather be healthy and give up coffee than be obese again. I'm going to talk to surgeon though.

For that reason my doc had "no coffees" post op for a year.
Coffee is highly acidic, and can cause issues. I had to give up my essprees coffee and drink warm or cold cold brewed coffee.

It took me somewhere between 2 to 3 months after vsg before I was able to drink coffee again. Even decaf, It's just too acidic for an unhealed stomach. After that I could enjoy coffee again with no problems. I also made the mistake of having some v8 juice early on, I thought I was going to die, so much acid.
