Crushing Meds
on 3/16/18 4:16 am
I have to crush all my meds & mix w water or tea. i am having a hard time w benedryl, its coated with a pink hard substance. So when I cru****s some big pink parts mixed in medication. I developed an allergic reaction in the hospital, my hands & feet are red, swollen, & itching. I dont have zyrtec on hand but i do have the benedryl. Will these waxy paint lookin pieces of the pink coat hurt my very new sleeve?
Why do you need to crush your meds?

When did u take whole pills? Do u ever drink coffee or any cadfeine? If so how long did u wait.? Right now Im allowed decaf, but its not tasty
The ASMBS doesn't seem to have any issues with us swallowing pills post-op, so I did immediately. Larger pills could be a problem, but small stuff like benadryl or Nexium or birth control was fine.
My program didn't restrict caffeine or coffee, but I'm also not a coffee drinker or a regular caffeine user. So it wasn't relevant to me! My idea with caffeine is that I only use it when I NEED it, that way it will work :) I try not to build up a tolerance to it.

I never crushed the first pill. The most I did was cut the larger ones on half, but no, the pink coating flakes won't hurt your sleeve.

If benadryl pills don't work, what about the liquid stuff that's given to kids?
An adult dose is 1 or 2 pills (25 or 50mg) every 4 hours. I believe 1 tsp of the children's liquid is equivalent to 12.5mg in pill form, so you would basically need a double dose. (Check with your doctor or pharmacist first, though, I'm not a medical professional!)

Safest thing is to run such things by your doc's team, as they are the ones giving the instructions. In general, pill crushing is a throwback to the RNY when they were worried about pills getting stuck in the stoma, which isn't a problem with the sleeve, though some may have to do it for a while if they have significant inflammation in their stomach post surgery but they tend to be the exception rather than the rule.
