Has anyone had the VSG with a Hiatal Hernia

There are a million variations in hernias. You can walk around with a minor hernia (or three) and never know you had it. Other hernias have literally killed people.

Don't judge by other's hernia experiences. This was a surgeon who actually went inside. I'd listen to his advice.

I think the question that's worth asking is "Do you trust your surgeon and his opinion?" If the answer is yes, go with RNY. If your answer is no, find a different surgeon.

I trust my surgeon! I just wanted this surgery to be done and feel like I am back at square one..i guess I will know more next Wednesday..

I think it's really easy, at this point, to stress out about all the potential worst case scenarios. Definitely remember to breathe and you'll find out more when you see your surgeon!

I had a known hiatal hernia before VSG that had me using a ppi and lots of Tums before surgery. My surgeon repaired it during vsg as we planned. I used a ppi after vsg for a few months and then quit them. I now have no reflux problems 8 years later. But I am not saying your surgeon was not correct in his/her judgement. There are all kinds of judgement calls. But if I were you I would least get another opinion on your options. And my DH had a hiatal hernia develop 6 months after vsg. Surgeon theorized the fat held everything in place and things moved around after massive weight loss. Surgeon repaired it and all is well. GL. Diane S

I am 1 year, 10 months out. I had a hiatal hernia repair with my VSG. The surgeon was aware of it ahead of time and even though I had reflux prior to surgery, she felt that the hernia repair and loss of weight would resolve the reflux. So far it has, but I know others who have had issues further down the road. Regardless, I am still happy with my choice though RNY was also an option for me.

I have not had any experience with this, but you must be so frustrated right now. Hang in there! Despite the hassle and disappointment, you will soon have surgery and be on the loser's bench. I'm sure there were some safety issues your doc was trying to protect you from. Best wishes!!

When I had my sleeve done 6 years ago my surgeon repaired a hiatal hernia we didn't know about. I got along fine until about the last year. Finally went back to my surgeon because my family doctor really didn't want to deal with it. My surgeon changed my meds & thought I needed an upper GI, it showed a large hiatal hernia. Last week she went in & repaired the hernia, found another one where I had a bowel obstruction plus some brown spots in my stomach from bile reflux. She did mention if this doesn't work I would need to convert to a RNY, but feels this will work good luck! With the size of your hernia I'm surprised your surgeon visit with your husband to get permission to repair it

I think I would choose a different surgeon if it did not affect my insurance coverage. I had a hernia repair. I'm trying to remember whether my surgeon stated that either 1/3 or 1/2 of all his patients needed hiatal hernia repair. It is due to being overweight and the stomach outgrowing the normal amount of space. If your surgeon has not encounted a large amount of hiatal hernias in overweight patients, and does not include language to fix the problem during WLS in the regular consent forms, I would be wary of his judgement and experience in bariatric surgery.

Is there any way you can get a second opinion from another bariatric surgeon? Everyone in my doctor's practice has an endoscopy as part of pre-surgical testing. She does them herself so she can visualize everything before WLS! She found a sliding hiatal hernia during my test and repaired it during the VSG last summer. She prescribed medication that I am now weaning off from this past two months. I only get acid reflux when I eat some types of spices or tomatoes with my protein or if I'm under a lot of stress. I know about the need for revision in some cases, but would like to prevent that if possible.
