Weird distribution of loss

its been 9 weeks since my VSG surgery, and I've lost 47 pounds counting the pre-op loss. I'm really happy with my loss so far, but am noticing that I'm primarily losing from the top half of my body, and my butt, hips, and legs are not changing as much as my bust, shoulders and arms. I've gone from a 2x top to an XL. Pants have gone from a snug 18 to a little bit roomier 18. Any one else experienced this kind of uneven distribution of their weight loss?

In my experience, my body shed all the easy weight first. The places where I had the least amount of stubborn fat, that fat went first. Then the main problems areas, then random places. Like the cankles I had that I never thought would go away, went away in the last 10-15 pounds.

The other thing is, the places where you have the most fat, well it is just going to take the longest for that fat to go away. And even if you are losing there, it is going to take longer to see it.

Most of my weight was in my stomach, and mainly lower stomach. Those are the places I still have fat.

I get DEXA scans to track my fat and lean mass, it breaks your body down in regions. I can see loses by region.

Yep. Normal. My arms, legs, and chest are all really small. My belly now looks like a spare tire around my hips.

It's very common and often referred to as the "melted candle" look.

I think my body eventually evened out, but I, too, lost from the top down.

Sounds like me! I'm pear shaped and I've always lost more weight initially up top, than compared to my bottom half. Although my sister is apple shape and she has the same issue too, that she loses up top first. I think its perfectly normal.

I'm 11 weeks post op, and I finally had to put away some pants I was wearing. I am still fitting into some of my pants/capris size that I was wearing at surgery date, but also some clothing that is a size smaller. So I think depending on cuts of clothes, I'm still in the same size or one size lower. As for tops, I'm being cheap lol I haven't gone shopping at all, yes some of my shirts are hanging off my shoulders (i'm sure I'm down at least a shirt size) but I'm trying to avoid a major wardrobe overhaul until the fall. My sister lost some weight as she went through a medical weight loss program, that she ended on the week I had surgery, so I have some hand me downs, that should get me through the summer.

Either way I'm sure I'll go down shirt sizes quicker than pant sizes, but that's been the norm for me all my life.

Keep up the great work and you'll see that pant size go down!

Heya!

One of the things I found is that it took me a VERY long time to need to move to a smaller size on my bottom half. I think that one of the main reasons for this was that I was in denial and when I had surgery my jeans were definitely TIGHT. So then I had to lose enough weight for them to fit properly. And THEN I had to lose enough weight for them to be too big! That took a while :)

Wardrobe overhaul is expensive. For me, my primary expense has been exercise clothing since I've turned into someone who exercises and while I can get away with non-exercise that don't fit completely perfectly, I need good fitting exercise clothes.

But I did, on the suggestion of my therapist of all people, switch from jeans to wrap skirts at some point in my weight loss. I'd been complaining to her about the challenge of finding jeans that fit my body correctly - they were either good in the waist but wrong in the hips or vice versa or whatever. She suggested wrap skirts. I invested in 20-30 of them after I'd lost 50-60 pounds or so and I've never gone back. Since they're wrap skirts, they change with my body which is awesome. Then I've only had to buy tops as I lose weight!

Thank you all for your responses. It's always good to hear from people who have been at this a while. I definitely went into this with a pear shape, and I guess it will just take a while to even out!

My top half also has less excess skin than my bottom half, which adds to the pear shape even after losing about 160 pounds. I'm wearing XS shirts and M-L bottoms, which is strange.

when I used to go to weigh****chers, they told us weight loss works from the top down so if you were there to lose weight from your ankles you were in for a long go.
Good news is the face (which people see most) improves first
