Reactive/Postprandial Hypoglycemia
Hello all! It has been a long time since I last logged on. I have reached my goal weight and have maintained well. I have however, eaten not so well lately. Stress factors triggering my bad eating habits. I am back on track now but interestingly, after eating all the junk I started to feel jittery, SOB, very sweaty, my mouth went numb, and I felt like I was going to faint. I am a nurse so I check my blood sugar thinking it was going to be high.. Turns out I was hypoglycemic at 47! This happened to my twice, both times after eating crap! I started to look up low blood sugar after VSG. Turns out (from what I read) 35% of post op ppl report this happens to them approximately 2 years after surgery. This is another motivation to eat healthy.
Yup, RH is very common starting a year or two after surgery. I would say a lot more than 35%. Whatever you do, don't treat it the way you would ordinary hypoglycemia.
RH is avoidable if we eat right.

It was happening to me with protein bars not junk, these were high quality low sugar protein bars. I gave them up. Issue resolved.
I still have to eat a decent number of calories at regularly intervals.

There's a podcast I listen to "Weight loss Surgery Podacast" by Reeger Cortell who is a bariatric nurse practitioner. It's an excellent source of information. She recently posted an episode about reactive hypoglycemia. I learned quite a lot from it.
