When did your Weight Loss Slow?

I'm asking this in the VSG forum, because I know RNY-ers will often lose quicker for longer. So, when did you see your loss slow? I don't mean a stall per say, but generally when you were to a 4-5lb monthly loss?

Hi. I was sleeved in August and lost well initially 19 pounds on pre op diet and the rest of August. Then 12 in September...10 in October, November and December.

After December it slowed pretty considerably. 5 in January, 7 in February and March, 5 in April and its looking like May is going to be the same.

Thats ok though. I'm happy with my progress and i am really trying to work on my food issues - so watching is keeping me honest

Don't stress - this is the rest of your life so if it takes you a while to get to goal then that's just longer you've had to solidify good habits.

My loss numbers are close to yours, so maybe I'll see similar. I only have 20lbs (8lbs to my Bari Center goal) to my stretch goal (and really truly, I don't have a lot of interest in going lower). I have lost 8lbs in the last 7 days but my monthly total will probably be like last month...around 12. I was just wondering if around the 4 month mark I could expect to see some slowing (which would be ok with me!).

Let's say, for argument's sake, you ate the same exact amount of calories, and had the same exact activity every day. In that case, your weight loss would slow down from Day One. Every pound you lose means you burn a couple of fewer calories each day, until your intake equals your expenditure.

But there are lots of variables. Water weight up and down, variations in eating, etc.

If you have a Fitbit, look at the website Trendweight. The only way to get weights into Trendweight is through Fitbit -- at least the last time I checked. But it gives you a nice graph of your loss. It smooths out the little slowdowns or speedups in loss. And, presuming you stick closely to your plan, it will extrapolate and tell you when you will reach your goal, to the day. I found it comforting, and very accurate.

You can see the progression of loss in my ticker. And I think a graph of weightloss would be pretty identical between RNYers and VSGers. More important would be the total amount of excess weight that needs to be lost.

I am going to look into the Aria Scale because I don't use a FitBit (I use an Apple Watch). I think that would probably help. So far I've stayed pretty much exactly on track each month after the 1st month post surgery. I'm thinking I'll do it again this month.

I have a couple people I work with and they both told me I can expect it to slow to 1-2lbs per week. They actually both told me that awhile ago and it's yet to slow and they seem baffled. I do know they added back in bread/potatoes/etc much earlier (I have not added them, I'm just shy of 4 months post op). So maybe their calories were higher. My plan says no veggies, no fruits, no starches until I can eat 3-4oz of protein in a serving. I can't, so I don't eat anything else.

At this point I get about 620 calories per day on average (per MFP). I would like to continue with no more than 800 through my goal and then add a bit at a time until I maintain. But, even the other folks who had the sleeve through my surgeon are telling me I'm losing too quick.

I'm not sure that's really a thing!

There's no such thing as losing too fast, as long as you are getting enough protein and taking your vitamins.

I'm sure those other people weren't lising as fast because they started back on bread, potatoes and such. I never touched those things until I passed my goal.

My center doesn't track body composition and I've looked into a Dexa scan and there isn't one in reasonable driving distance. My trainer does track it with some device, that I'm not completely sure of the accuracy, but it does show my body fat decreasing and muscle increasing. I'm doing strength training 2 days per week (back and arms one day and legs and shoulders the other). I will increase to 3 days per week starting at the end of May. I also am walking 3+ miles 3-4 days per week and just added interval running.

The Withings scale also works with Trendweight (and the Withings app). I believe that you can use any app that will export data to Fitbit or Withings, though.

"You'll have the best experience if you have to have either a FitBit or a Withings scale. If you don't have one and would like to buy one, the easiest way to get one is on Amazon: FitBit Aria or Withings Body Scale. They are both easy to setup. They measures both weight and body fat. And they can be used by everyone in your household.

If you don't have a scale, you can do things manually by creating a FitBit account and hand entering your weight there every day. Go ahead and connect your TrendWeight account to your FitBit account as if you had a scale. TrendWeight won't know that your weight readings were entered manually."

Good to know.

Trendweight is a fantastic tool. It's too bad more people don't use it.
