Unsupported?
Well the obvious solution is to stop telling people :) The only people I told pre-op where the people who needed to know because they shouldn't find out I was having surgery via the call to tell them I'd died during said surgery. So I told my partners, my parents, my brother, and my three best friends. I also told my massage therapist and my voice teacher, because surgery recovery was going to impact those things. Otherwise, I told no one. Specifically because I didn't want to deal with responses like you're getting.
But.. what's done is done.
You should come up with a script now for how to respond to your naysayers. Something like, "Thanks for letting me know how you feel. Have you seen the latest episode of The Walking Dead? I can't believe they killed Carl!!!"
And then repeat this script, word for word with no variation, Every Single Time someone brings up your surgery. (Since I assume you're not bringing it up.)

Well, that's where the script can come into play. Just because they're close to you doesn't mean that they get to have input into your healthcare decisions or try to sabotage you/manipulate you.
"This isn't a topic that's up for conversation, how about the local sports team?"

LOL, no. It's just "generic script example."

Because all they ever hear are horror stories, that's what makes the news. You rarely hear about ALL the people who are successful with WLS, because that's boring. Plus, unless you come to a site like this, people don't go around trumpeting, "Hey, I had WLS and it's going great!" for all to hear.
It's a personal thing for many of us and we just don't advertise.
Ignore the naysayers, because unless they are willing to suffer your continued health problems, psychological issues, and possibly die young of morbid obesity for you, then their opinions just don't count.
It's your decision, your health, and your life, so do what's right for YOU! They can either get on the "healthy Lsquared" train, or get the heck off!
Thank them (I say this sarcastically) for their opinion and tell them that you and your MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS have everything under control. Ask them if they fell and broke their arm, would they get it fixed???? When they say "of course," let them know that this is a MEDICAL situation that needs to be addressed. And then tell them if they can't be supportive of YOUR decision about YOUR health, they should keep their thoughts to themselves.
Good friends are like stars.
You don't always see them but you always know they're there.
