Pre-op weight loss
Hello everyone. I am not new to the site but ut is my 1st post since my wish has now come a reality. I have a surgery date of june 20th and i have to lose 55lbs. I have been recommended to do the atkins diet which worked at 1st with 9lbs loss but then i gained it back. I am a diabetic and read this plan is suppose to work best but i am not seeing the results. Can anyone tell me what you did to meet your required preop weight requirements.
The nutritionist told me to do the atkins diet which i have been doing but the selected foods were working against me. Although I was within the required daily net carbs the food had too much fat and calories. Found that out with the tracker so i have revamped and seeing a decrease on the scale. I doing as suggested and sticking to the plan. Thanks!
I wasn't required to lose a specific amount pre-op, but was required to lose weight to show that I was comprehending the surgeons plan and willing to make the necessary life changes. How did I do it? I followed my surgeons plan completely. I stopped drinking soft drinks and eating what he refers to as the BRPPS. (bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, sweets). I focused on lean protein and hydration, much like post op life. I started to exercise, mostly walking, at least 30 mins. each day. I started in May 2016 at 348 lbs and day of surgery Dec 14th I weighed 286 lbs. I also track all of my food on my fitness pal. If you keep a food journal try posting examples of a days meals on here and some of the vets may be able to take a look and offer some advice.
That's a lot of weight to lose in 3 months.
First, you must weigh/measure and track every single thing you put into your mouth using something like MyFitnessPal. Get into this habit now, it will serve you well for the rest of your life.
For my pre-op, I didn't need to lose weight, but I switched to having a protein shake for breakfast and lunch and then a protein forward dinner. I did that for two months pre-op and lost 25 pounds.

That is a lot to lose in three months, but looking at the requirement and challenge as a gift, will be a good start. I was required to lose 10% of my body weight before I could progress down the checklist. I eliminated all soda, and simple carbs and sugar. I practiced portion control, and began logging all of my food on My Fitness Pal. I increased water intake and physical activity. I tried new vegetables to curb hunger. These changes allowed me to continue to identify issues I had around food, even though I had previously had individual and group therapy, as well as OA, to learn new skills. I could then work on building additional skills to address my emotional connection to food BEFORE my VSG.
I encourage you to work with your nutritionist to develop a realistic plan that will meet your diabetic needs. Also consider counseling to continue to understand your relationship with food, and potential issues with compliance.
