NSV: No Longer Diabetic
Many years ago, before I saw my current awesome doctors, I had Medicaid and was completely disabled. My A1C at the time was 11 which was, really bad. They did not diagnose me as diabetic, strangely, and just told me to "watch what I ate." Anyway! I have much better doctors in the past five years. Post-op I went off my diabetic meds but my A1C was still high.
It was 4.9% last week - below even the normal threshold for the range.
Anyone who says the VSG cannot reduce diabetes is partially right. However, it still works, clearly. Bear in mind I also ruthlessly eat low carb, which also has a curative effect on beta cell recovery (beta cells make insulin in the pancreas).
So yes, you can be successful with the VSG, RNY, DS, hedgehogs, etc. What matters is what you put in the tank, too, just as much as your intestinal jigsaw puzzle. Some surgeries are definitely better statistically, however I think me and Harvey the Sleeve did alright this past 16 months. :)
Still 100 pounds to go, however 140 pounds of weight loss and no more diabetes isn't terrible.
I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!
