Newbie looking for guidence
Hia! I'm Erin, I'm awaiting approval for VSG (it's only been a week nervously bites her nails) I've been busily preparing for the post surgery stuff but keep coming back to the thorn in my side. I can't do pretty much any artificial sweetener even splenda and stevia give me terrible headaches. I've had a bit of luck with monkfruit powder but the taste is really hard to get past. I can't seem to find many recipes that don't include sugar free items (Jello, syrups etc) I've been trying to make my own fruit juice Jellos hoping that the sugar in the juice won't be too bad. Is there anyone else who's had this problem? how did you get past the sugar restriction? I'm hoping that a little incite will calm my nerves a bit.
There are artificial sweeteners in the protein shake I use, but those are the only times I ingest them. I believe that there are some "all natural" protein shake offerings out there - you'll need to look for them.
Aside from that? I don't use recipes that use sugar free things. I don't think they're necessary. Jello isn't necessary. It's fairly easy to avoid substitute products. Once in a blue moon I'll add real sugar to a recipe, but this is always in very small amounts (like a teaspoon for 4 servings) so it's a non-issue for me.

This one uses Stevia, for example.

This is the natural option of the brand I use. Good quality stuff. Uses a very small amount of real sugar. 5g carbs for 24g of protein.

If you have to avoid artificial sweeteners, it makes things harder, but not impossible. But don't use things with regular sugar. That's a big no-no.

Nutritionist suggested honey since the glycemic index is lower, I've been using it in breads for years instead of sugar and it's pretty good in the shakes I've been making. Just gotta make sure I don't get over a TBS since that's over the "limit" on carbs. I put limit that way because my doc and nutritionist have been really strong on nothing is off limits completely or forever just for now and later in moderation. The biggest thing they've been stressing to me is 80g of protein and 64oz of water and don't over-do it when I do start to eat again-- take it slow and chew the hell out of it.
