Sugar cravings.

Hey,

I have started my 3 months of weight loss prior to my surgery. I have decided on the Gastric

Sleeve for WLS. My diet is primary low carb.

My problem is at night I really crave sweets.

Any tips?

Thanks

Sugar free jello and sugar free popsicles work well for me for that.  Don't give in to the sugar monster- it just prolongs the agony.  Once you get about 7-10 without sugar you feel better and the cravings pretty much go away.

I kinda had to tough it out.  Once you get through the first 4-5 days it gets better.  I have cravings for nuts and yogurt and was eating it all the time.  It has taken about 5 weeks of not eating that combo for the craving to diminish. If I give in to the carbs I have to start all over again.

for me, I would have a nice cup of hot coffee or tea and my cravings went away.  still helps today when I get "the" feeling.

There are lots of sweets that will not ruin your diet.  There is difference in taste from real sugar though.  Sugar-free popsicles, yogurt, pudding, and jello are things you can get in single servings and keep available.

This could be a good time to start replacing a meal with a protein shake.  Just be sure you count all calories and are not "adding" a protein shake to your diet.  I used an ice cream machine to turn my protein shakes into sugar-free protein ice cream.

Another favorite was a strawberry shake, made with frozen strawberries, skim milk, a few drops of vanilla extract and some sweetener.  I make a great cheesecake and the recipe is in our recipe forum.

My current "go-to" sweet is my version of the Dole Whip that you get at Disneyworld.  I blend some frozen pineapple, coconut milk, lemon juice and sweetener until it is a smooth frozen treat.

I use Splenda for sweetener or Whey Low.  Whey Low tastes exactly like sugar because it is sugar that has been processed so you don't get the calories.  Try a bag of it and you will not be sorry.  I have used Whey Low in recipes to make things like lemon meringue pies and chocolate fudge.

You don't have to give up dessert, but you do have to learn to count calories properly if you want to lose weight.

Real life begins where your comfort zone ends
