exercising after sugery
Hello everyone!
I have a question as I get closer to getting a surgery date. What kind of exercise did you all do after the surgery? I know I can start walking right after the surgery in small doses.. And eventually build up. But when were you all able to do the elliptical or Bike? I know I cannot do any weight training till 4 weeks out. But I want to help the weight to come off quicker..
Yep, you're right. Walking and I added in steps - going up and down the steps in my house every hour, which continued to the office, where I try and get off my butt every hour and go up 3 flights then back down. Doesn't always happen, but I try.
You can't take care of them, if you don't take care of you!!

Thank you.. considering I live on the third floor and I have dogs the steps will not be a problem. lol I like the idea of doing that at work. I have the apple watch and it reminds me every hour to stand up for a minute.. I will just add the steps to it... Thank you
Walking is #1. I was doing 3 miles about 4 weeks out. Be really careful with the others you mentioned. You are having a major surgery so I would give it 6 weeks.
Good luck and wishing you much success!!

Exercise will not get the weight off faster. The body will lose at its own pace, ultimately its what you put in your mouth that gets the weight off. You can't outrun a bad diet.
Exercise is good for the body & good for your health. Think of exercise in these terms rather than using it to lose weight "faster".
The best person to ask when you can start doing cardio/exercise is your Dr & it comes down to how you feel. Some are rearing to go right out the gate, others need a bit more time. Remember in the beginning your body is healing, let it do its work. You'll have plenty of time to train for that first 5K mile.

Thank you! I understand that the majority of my weight loss will be from the foods or lack of foods that I eat! But as person someone who used to run 5Ks and in the military I was just wondering how everyone is bouncing back! And how quickly they were doing it. My surgeon told me after 4 weeks I can start with light weight trainjng(to help tone and reduce the lose skin)! i know I will need to start walking as soon as surgery is done! It is best for patients to get up and move! Better for circulation and help your bowels to start moving again. I know that everyone is different and we all heal differently I was just trying to get some feed back and what people are doing! Plus I wanted to know if people noticed a quicker weight loss when they started exercise.
I got a recumbant bike that I started using before surgery. My surgery was in December, so it was too cold to go out and walk. I rode my stationary bike as slowly as walking ,and started riding faster when I was cleared to exercise.

I started back to my normal walking the dog routine 1.5 weeks after surgery which is about 4.5 miles a week. I wanted to start doing more faster, but with work and new routine I was exhausted. Just started adding "some" swimming and elliptical in over the last two weeks. I'm 8 weeks out from surgery.

I have been getting my husband to try to get our Wii hooked up again. It has been sitting on a shelf since we moved into this house over two years ago. There are several good wii exercise discs if you like that sort of thing. I have a boxing one I particularly like but I'm sure I wont be up to that for a few weeks post-op. The Wii fit program has some easier exercises that I think will help keep me moving post-op without overdoing it.
I was told not to do anything other than walk for 6 weeks.
Lots of people post on here how exercise wont help lose weight faster, etc. I dont know. It may or may not, I have no idea.
I just notice a strong theme of people not really taking advantage of their new healthy(ish) body. What fun is being skinny if you cant climb stairs without being winded? Or get tired doing yardwork?
I am big into weight lifting before surgery, and I plan to be even bigger after.
Once you're cleared for exercise, find something that keeps you active. It can be anything... swimming, hiking, jogging, mountain climbing, weight lifting, zumba, etc. Just do SOMETHING. Who cares if it doesnt help you lose weight faster.
It helps your body be healthy.
It will help prevent us from being a frail old person who is confined to a chair in the last years of their lives... which would suck, even if I'm skinny.
(not saying you wont/dont exercise, my "you" is a generalization) :P
