My surgeon does a full metabolic panel, cholesterol, blood sugar, kidney and liver, iron, B-vitamins. A lot of the tests are grouped together and your doctor can order a "set" to get a good baseline.
You might want to call your surgeon's office to see if she/he does routine tests. Mine does one prior to every appointment, so I did them at 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, 6 months, and twice a year after that. If you've got a surgeon visit coming up you may not need your GP to do it.
