Gallbladder issues
on 5/10/16 9:32 am
I had my gallbladder out several years before WLS. For the longest time, it felt like somebody had punched me in the diaphragm, and I felt vaguely like I had to throw up. It was absolutely miserable, but I wrote it off as an ulcer, and it took three ER visits and two specialists to figure out that it was actually my gallbladder. Once I had it out, though, everything was just peachy!

VSG 2013, RNY conversion 2019 due to GERD. Trendweight here!
I had my gallbladder out 8 months after my VSG. It started with a stabbing pain on the right side below my bra line that radiated around to my back. The stabbing pain would subside to a dull ache from mid chest around to my back. I also had bloating and constipation. My surgeon ordered an ultrasound that showed stones. He said we could do a function test, but didn't think it was necessary since the stones were clearly visible on the scan. The surgery itself was easy. It was outpatient. Surgery at 8:00 a.m. on a Friday, discharged by 1:00 that same day and I was on a flight for a business meeting the following wednesday. Good luck!
I had my gallbladder out about 8 months after my VSG as well. I looked back at my posts and these were my symptoms:
"I had what I am almost certain was a severe gallbladder attack last night. 10 out of 10 agitated pain right below my sternum in the epigastric area. Pain had me doubled over and doing Lamaze breathing just to get through it. It felt like I was going to die! Pain lasted about 20-30 minutes and then just as quickly as it came on it was gone."
I had had several episodes like this over a few months, had an ultrasound which showed stones and then had my gallbladder removed. No problems since!
Good luck!

Gallbladder problems are common after any significant weight loss, whether from surgery or diet. My gallbladder was removed 20 years ago. I had increasing episodes of pain that started out like indigestion, then increased in frequency and severity. The last bout was severe pain, nausea, vomiting, fever - the works.
It is common after significant weight loss. After the birth of my second, I started experiencing the pain but had no idea what it was. You feel like there's a brick in between your rib cage and there's constant pushing and squeezing. The pain is unbearable and no matter what you do (trying to pass gas, go to the bathroom, advil) nothing helps. Mine followed by eating fatty foods, which was actually peanut butter. The last one I had was the worst, lasted over 12 hours, and which is why I went to ER. They did testing, found out what it was, and then I scheduled the surgery.
Yep. Had mine out 4 years nearly to the day post Vsg. Pain under the right rib cage, stomach pain after eating (especially fatty food- not even that much fat), vomiting, dull ache under the rib cage. Attacks would bring very sharp pain that you can't get rid of by switching positions/walking around- but it would be intense for about 30 minutes and then back down. THe dull ache leftover from it though would last a few days. I also had a lot of reflux during this period, but had a very large hiatel hernia so I assume that was more of the hernia issue. It got bad enough between the gallbladder and hernia that I had to put myself on a liquid diet. Lost a lot of weight without trying.
