How do you relieve workout soreness without Advil?

Have you tried moist heat? I bought myself a tiny "TENS' type unit. Not a prescription one just something small from China and it works very well when slapped on tight aching muscles. Mine is called "Healthmate Forever". At the time I bought it they were selling for under $50 on ebay. It is about the size of a credit card though a bit thicker.
Icy Hot creme/bar, Aspercreme. Then there's old fashioned ice bag, moist heat, massage. The shiatsu massage pad feels very nice & comes with heat.

Rest, ice, foam rolling, lots and lots of stretching, sufficient time to recover.

I would use Biofreeze over Icy Hot or Aspercreme, which contain NSAIDS. Ever though they are used topically, it does get into your bloodstream.

I thought the problem with nsaids was taking it in pill form for the possibility of ulcers?
edited to add triethanolamine neutralizes the acidity of salicylic acid which is in both the icy hot & aspercreme, but this is from wikipedia, doesn't mean I know anything.

All the creams mentioned are simply counterirritants and the only real therapeutic value is administered in your rubbing the area with application. They are a waste!
If you are just beginning, stretch well and use a foam roller. After lifting, do an active cool down and follow it with ice. You can ice every waking hour for 20 minutes. Your body will adjust and flush the lactic acid in a few days. Just keep up your cardio and muscular activities! No need to heat or use a TENS at this early stage. That will only exacerbate the inflammation cycle.
Oh man, why would you want to get rid of that pain?! I work out with heavy weights 4 days week or so, and have for years... I LONG for that pain! Sometimes I'll stop working out for a week or two just so when I go back I'll get some lactic acid built up and release it. That pain is like a high for me :)
