I am 1 week post op and have been constipated, I know this is normal.  But tonight I was finally able to go to the bathroom and there was quite a bit of bright red blood in my stool.  Thoughts on this?  Is it normal?

Bright red means it is from lower in the tract- black tarry darker type is higher up. Either way, worth a call to your doc just to check in.

Thanks.  I was just trying to determine if it was worth the emergency call to the on call dr or waiting until tomorrow for my dr.  I may just leave a message tonight and they can call me back tonight or tomorrow, whichever they feel is necessary.

I agree with Happyteacher - call your doctor.  I had the same thing a week out and it ended up being a hemorrhoid from being constipated and trying to push.  THAT was fun on top of recovering from surgery!

My surgeon indicated to me that a small amount of blood in my stools for the first week is normal but that I should call of it continues past the first week. Since you're right on the cusp, I would call (even if for nothing more than to put your mind at ease). Good luck!

I had this issue for about a week and a half after surgery.  My surgeon had told me to go to the ER, but I waited it out (I was self-pay and knew that this would not be covered since it was a "complication" from surgery).  It was fine.  Hopefully it is for you too.
